Re: Moderator Speed (from Panasonic Thread)
Reading fast is good: reading fast without enunciation is bad. You must "punch" words, and pronounce as accurately as you are able. I read fast at tournaments: I do not read so fast that I cannot be understood, and I do not sacrifice clarity for speed. Sure, I've experienced readers who re...

Re: 2008 Panasonic Academic Challenge: Illinois wins!
I very much agree that I want to hear more. My experience with PACE has been an absolute high standard of professionalism (and I too am not a member). I think that a national tournament should start on time, or very close to it. I think that a national tournament should have more than one official ...

I am so glad I belong to a church where I don't have to check my brain at the door.
I am also glad I teach in a parochial school where the examination of all beliefs in encouraged.

NSC Moderator Discussion
According to Rush Limbaugh or some other political commentator on the radio today that my friend had on, Exxon-Mobil is getting out of the gasoline business in the U.S. citing the fact that its not profitable enough. It is my experience that whatever Rush Limbaugh says, the opposite should be assum...

Furthermore, a lot of coaches are more interested in local issues, such as getting support from their school, recruiting students, finding local tournaments, getting fair treatment and good moderators at those tournaments, etc. The idea that question quality is more important generally is a minorit...

somehow I don't remember the old Texaco TV programs having as much kibbutzing between questions as I saw earlier this month at Marymount. Between questions, the players went to collective farms in Israel? That seems very disruptive. If they were kibbitzing, talking between questions, that gets anno...

I cannot truly give an opinion on NAC, as I have never been to that tournament. However, I do know Ernie Anderson, who regularly works with Chip on his tournaments. Ernie has hosted a quiz-style TV show on local TV whenever possible, and works tirelessly to get one on the air whenever it is not. Ern...

Maybe so, but have you actually watched the PAC? No offense, but even with Norman Chad doing commentary, it would have the potential to cure insomnia. After watching last year's championship match DVD, I would have to agree. And I am a big quiz bowl fan. A professional announcer would probably help...

It simply doesn't happen in most computational questions, because it usually ends up rewarding whoever has the best mind for numbers, and quizbowl is not the...

That's hard to say. Different tournaments seem to have different emphases, some seem to be about 50% biology, others weighted to earth science. They are supposed to be about evenly weighted between the (now 7) divisions, That doesn't always happen, apparently depending on who is writing/editing the ...

I have found that to get newspaper coverage, I have had to write and submit it myself...sometimes it gets heavily and badly edited, but smaller papers often run it just as I write it to fill space. TV stations will sometimes send a reporter, especially in smaller markets, if it is a slow news day. G...
