Objectively, however, I think that we have a need for affirmative action. Certain segments of our society have clearly been put at a disadvantage by past abuses, and that'd led to a level of inequality that is not only morally wrong, not only bad for society, but also bad for the economy. Something...

U. of Michigan decides equal opportunity still sucks...
http://www.umich.edu/pres/speeches/061103div.html Proposal 2, a constitutional amendment voted on (and passed) in a referendum during the latest elections in Michigan, effectively bans affirmative action for public institutions (employment, government, etc.). Despite the fact that Michigan's citizen...

Part of the national tournament experience is the treatment and the venue, as well. ASCN has always offered good treatment and a great venue. Also, at this point it's too late for the LAMP people to attend ANY national due to scheduling conflicts and tournaments being full. The players on the team s...

Re: Chicago
...certainly the only people who were still coming were the faithful few- which have now been severely financially injured. Are there any woluld-be-ASCN teams/coaches/players reading this? Can we get your take? Well, speaking as a former player who attended ASCN twice and whose school has gone to p...

The District system is a business matter for ASCA, in my opinion. I don't think they intentionally have an unequal distribution of teams, but there is an exponentially higher probability that more teams will continue to participate in (and as such, pay dues for) the ASCA state tournament. Localized ...

I don't see anything wrong with locally centralized home-school collectives playing quizbowl at all, especially if they have a common curriculum supplier, etc. To disqualify home-schoolers in a local collective would mean disqualifying all local magnet schools (like LAMP, my alma mater). Furthermore...

There's this one fella at Vanderbilt every year that does an excellent job reading. He's a big guy with red hair and he is a great combination of good speed and near perfect pronunciation. At NAQT Nationals I think we had Dwight Kidder once, and he was really good. The one thing that really separate...

One of my HS teammates from last year is at Auburn now, and I remember him saying something about a team there. I would assume he's involved with it, if he was talking about it. If Auburn has a team, then Alabama really needs one... Just sort of random, but I think one of the B-teamers from last yea...

I think U of A only runs a campus-wide CBI competition. You sign up your team, play in the tournament, and the winning team represents the school at more CBI events. I didn't participate this year because of the dubious rumors I've heard about CBI. For a school with 24,000 student enrollment and a s...

With apologies to everyone else whose tournament I've been involved with (including several of my own), Brookwood's tournament is the most well-run tournament in terms of logistics that I have ever seen. I agree with Lee: The face to face competition is one of the most important factors in quiz bowl. It's a lot easier to answer questions looking at a computer screen than looking at people on the other side of the table/room that are thinking just as hard as you are and trying to beat you to the punc...

I think that high school curriculum has a major effect on quiz bowl ability, especially with pyramidal questions. AP History courses are probably the single-most effective way to improve one's performance on, obviously, history questions, but also art/music movements and the history behind them, imp...

LAMP's in the ghetto, so the only thing available for sale around is crack and bootleg CDs. We always sold pizzas and had various other concessions at tournaments, and it worked really nicely and kept things running on time. Playoffs would be announced right after lunch briefly in a room above the l...

I'm glad it's going back to Chicago. 'Twas a nice area, and it provides an incontrovertible reason to attend NAQT for schools whose coaches (like mine) insist on going to ASCN each year. That assumes there will be an ASCN next May. True dat. I've graduated already, so I don't really care one way or...
