Re: Praise Song Part II
There are two memories I'd like to share, the yin and yang of Weiner: - In 2007, at Michigan's MLK tournament / Ann B. Davis tournament, back when that was a thing, I spent a chunk of Friday "helping" to playtest a set Matt was working on, which mostly involved sitting in a hotel room and ...

Re: CO History 2015
I am also old, know even less than Jerry, and would like to register myself as a free agent for a Loaseathon the likes of which has never been seen before. EDIT: Jerry and I will team up for this event after realizing that we both remembered where we were and what we were doing when we heard that Cr...

Re: WUStL Updates Statistics Live!: real-time Web scorekeeping
Oh, and Illinois B did pretty much neg themselves out of both of their games against Illinois A. That was our clever plan all along. I played Gateway, and this was the smoothest scorekeeping I've ever seen in a decade of playing quizbowl. Every room could see the results of every other room in real...

Re: ACF Fall and numbers of packets
What you see as a waste of time, I see as a meaningful step towards fuller participation in quizbowl. ACF requires teams composed of players with two or more years of experience to write a packet. As editors, we obviously need those questions to fill the packets in our tournaments. But beyond that ...

Re: ACF Fall and numbers of packets
I'm talking about the connection to the circuit that comes from making a meaningful commitment to writing questions and improving as writers of future questions, not some kind of personal bond with the editors. Writing a packet, even an unused one, is not a waste of time. It's part of an experience...

Re: ACF Fall and numbers of packets
It helps keep teams connected with the circuit in ways beyond simply showing up to tournaments. I've never developed a connection with someone by sending them an e-mail with an attachment. And would it damage this mystical connection to have teams submit half-packets? 43 unused packets is a tremend...

Re: Attack site?
Has some sort of malicious programming been introduced onto the site as a consequence of the attack, or in some unrelated incident? I'm no computer expert, but I'd like to know if it's possible, and (if so) whether this has happened or not.

Re: Better options available
One key reform would be for NAQT to do away with the database - at least for SCT and ICT - and instead assemble questions on a tournament-by-tournament basis for those two events, without storing them for future use. Granted, having active players edit sets causes some problems for our existing dat...

Re: Better options available
I mean, the clear partial remedy is to include subject editor as well. No question it's imperfect, but it would certainly have the effect Susan described--it'd also just create some false positives, which can be accounted for via you chiming in and saying "I'd have kept this question this way ...

Re: 2009 NAQT ICT to be held in Dallas
Illinois A is undefeated at the moment. Carleton is 6-1 in the same bracket.
And really, who the f*ck decided to put a national championship in someplace that's not the Midwest or the Northeast/Mid Atlantic? That's where all the quizbowl is, and that's where all the big events should be.

Re: Distribution: Origins, Motivations
If enough people want to add literary criticism to the distribution, perhaps it could be worked in as part of the lit distribution rather than the SS distribution. It could be slowly worked in as a .5-per-packet thing, since I'm not sure how widely known literary criticism is in the broader circuit....

Re: Should teams be required to use this board for their events?
It would seem to be stupid to not announce a tournament here. It would also seem to be asinine to require it, though, since what sort of enforceable and proportional penalties are you going to impose on a team that doesn't post here?

Re: The July Crisis: Chicago Open History Doubles
Ya left Greg Baboukis (that's me) off the list of players. I may or may not already have a teammate lined up. He's not on this list either, but since I'm still not sure if he'll be there or not, it can be left for later.

Re: Just leave CBI alone
Not to accuse people of shooting in the dark here, but is anyone from FSU on these boards to explain themselves, or is there some way for people who want to find out what happened to contact the FSU players and find out what happened? It's entirely possible that FSU was prevented from attending owin...

Re: Chicago Open Team Discussion
I just happen to think that my time would be better spent writing questions or studying, as has been pointed out earlier in this thread, than getting up and going to Chicago to go 0-fer or 1-fer in a tournament. I fail to see how not wanting to spend a day getting creamed when I could be making myse...

Re: Chicago Open Team Discussion
If you're that irked at the format, or the existance of these juggernaut teams, then don't play the main event. I understand we now have a fine choice of 83.75 side tournaments on every part of the mACF distribution (except science,) so just show up for the megafinal, which might go down as one of t...

But I do agree that in general the art and probably the mythology at SCT and ICT are compartively very easy in comparison to what you'd find at similar level ACF or mACF tournaments. I was under the impression that this was the case for every single subject, since NAQT was supposed to be easier tha...

Northwestern and U of I out? Who does that leave in that regional? The Valparaiso Virgins? On a somewhat more serious note, I would like to express my approval of everything Awherman mentioned above. Although these boards probably can't arm-twist NAQT into trying the above recommendations, perhaps s...
