2024 Vermont NAQT States Results and Reflections
The Vermont NAQT Championship Tournament was played on Friday, March 15 at Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont, home of the Crimson Tide. Mr. Michael Whalen of Spaulding ran the tournament, assisted by indispensable Vermont quiz bowl pillar Kevin Commo, and the smooth execution of the event was ...

There were egregious logistical problems (bye teams were actually point-blank denied when they offered to help read) Is this really true? I read during my bye round, as did two of my teammates, and there didn't seem to be any objections. Seth Teitler's offer to read our packet for Chicago B was met...

There were egregious logistical problems (bye teams were actually point-blank denied when they offered to help read), and there were lots of repeats, but I don't think we should let that overshadow the fact that this set was one of the best-written and best-edited sets in recent memory, on par with ...

Penn Bowl quick results
Brown defeated Chicago A in the finals after an abbreviated round robin to remain the only undefeated team in the field and win the tournament.

i'm not trolling, i just thought the point was kind of obvious...maybe you just want me to use proper capitalization, fine Back in the mid to late 90s, quiz bowl was easy enough so that some random undergrad who paid attention in his classes could go to a tournament and probably get a tossup or two ...

Chicago A went undefeated to win; Stanford A was second; Chicago B walked it out to take third despite being under .500. The tournament was slightly less horrendous than one might have expected, with the obvious exception of my UCLA namesake's "I am a fucking tool and love theme rounds" pa...

I agree with what everyone's saying about how the questions were too long and in many cases too steeply constructed, but lest we forget, I'd like to point out that the answer set was suitably accessible and the clues were reasonably novel and interesting. In these respects, the editors did an excell...

I'll join the chorus of voices declaring that comprehensibility is more important than raw speed. I myself learned this lesson the hard way: by being the last room done at tournaments at which I've moderated too fast to be coherent and gotten flustered while trying to keep scores because I was think...

I always thought of MLK as a sort of prepatory tournament for NAQT, in which the distribution was closer to the ACF ideal but the format and frenetic pace of play mirrored that of the upcoming NAQT sectionals. While I prefer untimed rounds, I always thought that MLK's observance of timed rounds was ...

I agree with Ryan. Just as literary analysis is grounded in knowledge of texts, much of contemporary macro-level social science is grounded in a knowledge of geography. If we accept that the study of, say, international politics is as worthwhile an academic pursuit as critical analysis of literature...

In 1997, the venerated John Sheahan posted to the now-sadly-defunct alt.college.college-bowl newsgroup a dishearteningly well-reasoned explication of CBI's seeming immunity to market pressures exerted by the will of the top-tier circuit teams. His post is available thanks to Google's Usenet archive,...

Since Andrew Yaphe is generally acknowledged as the best player, it would be interesting to see how you would rerank 2-20 if the criteria were changed to who would make the best two-person team with #1 against a national collegiate field. I agree with Jerry that Seth Teitler or Jeff Hoppes would be...

Voted for Chicago. Both Andrew and Subash are game-distorting forces on the buzzer. With Yaphe/Teitler/Austin/Devecka on NAQT and Maddipoti/Teitler/Austin/Devecka on ACF, I think Chicago will remain the team to beat, even in an increasingly strong midwest region. It's also my understanding that Ed C...

You'd be practicing with Yaphe and Subash though, so really you'd be something of an outlier. Actually, Andrew Yaphe never comes to practice. When Subash comes he usually just reads questions for us or sits in the corner with a book and picks up the questions nobody else gets. Even when he actively...

As a first year student coming from an extremely uncompetitive Quiz Bowl environment (New Hampshire) in which I was one of the top players into the highest level of intercollegiate competition (the University of Chicago), I think that the hubris of the average first-year player is greatly overestima...
