ACF Regionals 2019: January 26, 2019

This is the official announcement for ACF Regionals 2019, which will take place on January 26, 2019. It's largely based on the announcement for last year's Regionals, with the major exception that this year's regionals will follow the standard ACF distribution as found on the ACF website. Re: Chicago Open 2018 Thanks and Discussion

A thing I particularly liked about this set was the way that literary criticism clues were incorporated into the bonuses. A lot of the bonuses on core topics like The Turn of the Screw were made more interesting and educational by those clues (and similarly for other sorts of clues in many cases, li...

Re: Scattergories 2

There are currently only eight people signed up, and I don't think doubles teams will be too fun for a set of this difficulty, so what I'll do is just run this as a (free-of-charge) shootout. I've never used Discord before but I'm signing up now and it seems easy to use, so I'll run it there instead...

Yeah, I was going to say I would have hubristically considered myself the best "art film" player among people who currently play a bunch of stuff, except then Derek outscored me by 5 points or something on the film at Jordaens. Re: CMST: General Discussion

I wouldn't say 1 world literature tossup per round should be mandated even at this level, though you're right that the literature could have been better subdistributed. (In particular, there was more Russian lit than there needed to be, and a couple of those questions could have been replaced with w...

The tossup from last year's ACF Nationals on the word "nothing" in Shakespeare was a thing of beauty. It made me realize, in the midst of hearing the question, that interesting connections could be drawn between the various uses of the word in Shakespeare's works, and it did so with an extremely acc...

This director placed a car on a specially-designed turntable to film a scene in which Georgia Lorrison drives recklessly through a torrential rainstorm while sobbing. A film by this director uses non-diegetic (“non-die-uh-JET-ick”) shots of a ghostly ship, a skull in the desert, and an egg to imply...

I'd also like to apologize for a clue in the egocentrism tossup that wasn't locked down enough. Though Piaget designed the three mountains task to test for egocentrism, you could accurately say "theory of mind" on that clue instead (which at least a couple players did).

Yeah, I wrote on the 1940s because I couldn't write a tossup on "Powell and Pressburger," for obvious reasons. I may have overestimated how well it would play since I tend to think of movies alongside their years of release, but maybe most people simply don't do that. I'd also be interested to hear ...

There's 2/2 economics in the set, with only one tossup really being "technical economics" (in packet 12). There were generally 2/3 or 3/2 of most major SS subfields (depending on how some interdisciplinary questions are counted), so in an ideal world there would have been at least one more econ ques...

This tournament was exemplary, particularly the literature. There were many, many questions that probed interesting aspects of important topics (the tossup on "nothing" from Shakespeare stands out as probably my favorite example).
