Re: NAQT eligibility changes for 2018-19

Individuals wishing to compete at high school tournaments must not turn 19 until after the current competition year—in other words, if they will still be 18 or younger as of next July 31. This seems like a pretty big change, especially to be announced a month and a half into the school year. If som...

Re: What is the most pressing concern in college quizbowl to

First of all, I want to mention that most of my involvement with college quiz bowl since 2009 has been quite peripheral--lurking on these forums and playing a few open tournaments. I'm approaching this thread mostly as a high school teacher and quiz bowl coach (also, FWIW, I've spent seven years tea...

Re: CMST: General Discussion

Overall I thought the set was really well done. My obvious comparison point is with This Tournament is a Crime, which I played at Rice last year. I think CMST did a better job of having gettable powers, and even first lines that were buzzable. I also thought that 30s on bonuses were more attainable,...

I thought the religion was very well done. I'm grateful for the prompt after I said Jerusalem for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre question; I knew it from the ladder clue but wasn't sure what kind of location was wanted. I also liked the Romani question. I thought the fire temple bonus part questio...

Re: CMST: Specific question discussion

I thought the third part of the Esquire/JFK/racing bonus was confusingly worded. I was pretty sure that "The Last American Hero" was about auto racing, but the last clue was about the Hunter S. Thompson Kentucky Derby piece, so we said horse racing and got it right. Now, I believe the bonus part sai...

My guess is that the vast majority of sets have some teams (at one mirror or another) put up less than 10 PPB. If you scrapped the easy parts, you wouldn't be doing as good a job of distinguishing between an 8PPB team and a 12PPB team. Philosophically, I don't think easy parts should be automatic--i...

Re: 2017 (This) Tournament is a Crime General Discussion

I am not a fan of prompting on "mass" when the answer is "requiem" because it creates confusion with an already-existing musical genre, in much the same way that "John Adams" is not promptable for "John Quincy Adams." I know it's a little opaque, but it can also be helpful in preventing procedures ...

As I mentioned in the general thread, the religion seemed a little bit more Jewish-heavy to me, but they may be partly a function of not hearing every single packet. Re: 2017 (This) Tournament is a Crime Specific Discussion

I think the "God" in Judaism question was poorly worded. Regardless of that particular issue, I think it's a bad idea to use "god" in the question and then ...

First of all, thanks to the editors who put the set together. I had a lot of fun playing and I think this did a really good job of hitting the stated Nats-minus difficulty.
