Re: 2013 NSC Set Discussion

My primary goal in this set, especially when editing my portion, was innovation and creativity. I think for a tournament like PACE, which has to simultaneously distinguish a wide spectrum of teams, it's important to ask about well-trod topics in new ways. I also personally believe that its also imp...

Re: 2013 NAC

So, to summarize: You think quizbowl should change to be more like what people who want quizbowl to be terrible want to see, in order to attract those people. Many others disagree with you. Repeat once every six months from 2005 to the end of time. Wait, what the heck? Why is everything this guy ab...

Re: Nature of Studying

This is, essentially, an extension of "easy high school quiz bowl is too easy to challenge me. Therefore, it must be redesigned so it is a challenge for me. Nevermind the consequences of that, such as sets being dramatically harder for new high school teams, or high school teams that don't hav...

Re: Nature of Studying

I make sweeping pronouncements about the tournaments I've played. Which are mostly IS sets, easy college sets, and HSNCT.

As I said, maybe the top of high school quiz bowl is shiny and wonderful. But that doesn't change the matter of the rest of it.

Re: Nature of Studying

Thanks to Kevin for airing much more eloquently what I've been privately complaining about to him for about a year. You can't just say "at the best levels of quiz bowl, it gets better". I've never played PACE NSC, maybe it has these wonderful science questions. But it doesn't matter, becau...

Re: Southern California Discussion 2012-2013

(along with SciBowl; doesn't good quizbowl have any govt. contacts to force the Dept. of Energy to change it?) At risk of diverting the discussion, is your beef with Science Bowl about the format or the organization? I've been defending the format to my teammates for about a year now and I haven't ...

Re: 2012 HSNCT discussion

We were confused by what seemed to be a Saturday focus on India as well. Set things: I noticed a lot of really fun physical games come up in this tournament (i.e. Risk, Dominion, Diplomacy, Agricola), as opposed to what, if I remember right, is a standard penchant for video games. That was very enjo...

Re: Are 20 Questions Enough?

I've managed to gather that we're not on 24/24 vs. 20/20 anymore, but I'm not quite sure what the main points in contention are here. Could someone clarify for me? Are we arguing about whether math tossups can be written well, whether most math tossups suck, whether we should have more math tossups,...

Clicking on any of the links in the initial stat page seems to fail. Is anybody else getting this?

Re: Early Predictions for the Top "13" in 2011-2012?

As a student, especially one only two years into quiz bowl, I have nowhere near enough experience to say anything strong - but don't leave Cistercian out. You were right to put them on the cusp and the only reason I don't think they're at exactly the same level as LASA is that they lost two people.

Re: 2011 NAQT MSNCT

The last two games have not started yet. (And my brother has enough time to make a call home.) So I would guess that there is still a lunchbreak until 1:30, though he didn't say.

Ah, good, then I can tell the most amusing neg of my quiz bowl career so far: Against Cistercian, the LASA B captain said "Father Gregory" for "Father William".

Re: Texas Invitational (April 22-23, 2011)

Unless the results are based off anything but record, LASA B came in fourth - we beat Cistercian the second time around in the playoffs, and were tied in record before that.

Re: IMSANITY Distribution Discussion

I am, of course, assuming that people write their questions based on questions from previous tournaments. (A fair assumption, I think) Correct me if I'm mistaken, but wasn't part of the point of this tournament to expand the existing noncomp math canon? I saw this tournament as inventing new answer...
