Well, down here in New Orleans... the 2005 NAQT ICT has been quite a reunion of past Illinoisians. I talked to Kelly Tourdot (Stillman Valley), Paul Gauthier (Wheaton North), and Max Parrish (Rockford Auburn) today. Yogesh Raut (IMSA) is here as well with Stanford, and was one of the leading scorers...

As a former player who moderates as often as he can (which sadly is not very often), I think former players make excellent moderators when they are available. I think that if more former players were approached by coaches and tournament directors and asked to moderate, they probably would. I check t...

To return to the more relevant topic here (and since I just finished my last final and don't want to think about anything academic...), it is not possible to be a Sox and Cubs fan. Especially in Illinois. That's tantamount to saying you're both Catholic and Protestant in Northern Ireland -- besides ...

As the token Rockfordian on the board (as coach Egan pointed out), it is my duty to report that Auburn easily won the Guilford sectional today... or yesterday I guess. Auburn beat Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge 455-158, Crystal Lake South 360-164 and Rockton Hononegah 466-115. Have fun with them at stat...

The best teams, not to beat a dead horse, but rather to emphasize this to its proper extent, are TEAMS. They are balanced, they get along well, everyone contributes, and everyone can pick up the slack if someone's having a bad round. In my high school experience, the hardest teams to beat (and the o...

Improving an existing team
I was wondering if anyone from those wonderfully successful programs out there could share some of the means by which they become and stay so successful. I'm trying to improve our team to the point where we're competitive on the level of some of the teams out here. We (Dartmouth) have had a program ...

We had a few 430-20 matches my senior year of high school (Illinois). At regionals we beat Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge 477-58 or something like that... that was a fun match. The biggest beat down I've seen in Illinois quiz bowl was at the 2002 NIU Tournament, when Wheaton North beat Joliet 545-65 (wi...

A damn shame too. A lot of good teams get prevented from going downstate due to some stiff competition within their sectional, the kind of which downstate teams don't necessarily have to face. Another solution would be expanding the state tournament bracket to 12 or 16 teams and inviting wild cards ...

Let's see if I can answer all 3 of these in one shot. 1) Admittedly, Hanover isn't New York or Chicago. In spite of that, I rarely find myself bored. The Greek system is very big here, and provides many of the social outlets on campus, but hardly all. Students here are very creative and we manage to...

As far as future good teams go, I have to stand up for my alum, Rockford Guilford. With mostly freshmen, they finished 4-1 in the morning at the Boylan f/s, but lost a close playoff to hononegah -- I moderated for the morning, and I was quite impressed. They were 3rd at the Rockford Auburn tourney. ...

Paragon1, welcome to Dartmouth. Our program has been up and down, and we're in a tough region, but things are beginning to look up. Another solid freshman will make life a lot better. If you have any questions about Dartmouth in general, email me at [email protected].
