Re: Why College Recruiting Fails (2 of 3)

Is there a single effective faculty sponsor of a college quizbowl team anywhere in the country who is not themselves a former college quizbowl player of some note? Well, I've been made to believe that I'm an effective faculty sponsor of a college quiz bowl team. I feel pretty good about 14 straight...

Re: ACRONYM 16 Premiere: Minnesota, 2/18/23

This was a fun and very well-run tournament--thanks for organizing it and thanks to all who staffed! And thanks for doing it on a Saturday, which meant that we didn't have to drive back home through the cold, dark, moose-filled Upper Peninsula at 2 am!

Any chance that at least one Minnesota/Upper Midwest mirror of this could be on a Saturday this year, not a Sunday?

Re: Starting a team at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa

Hi Luke, I just want to add some words of welcome from the team that's possibly the farthest away from you geographically, and yet still in the North circuit. I'm glad to see a team at Cornell. I've swung by the campus a couple of times on my way to events in Iowa City, just because I like college c...

Re: 2019 ACF Fall at Minnesota (11/02/2019)

My team, NMU (not a liberal arts college, but also not an R1 powerhouse) greatly enjoyed the tournament. It was very well-run, and I appreciated your thoughtful replies to my requests for accomodations. I'm always confident that, despite the 6.5 hour drive, tournaments at the U of MN will be positiv...

Re: Michigan Discussion and Scheduele 2019-2020

Though I highly doubt that there are other Yoopers here, here's this season of High School Bowl's tournament bracket with airing dates. Well, I've only been living here 13 years so I don't count as a Yooper. But NMU has a team! (See my post, above.) Good luck to your team in HSB, and if you want to...

Re: Michigan Discussion and Scheduele 2019-2020

To travel even further north, the teams at Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech will each very likely be hosting at least one high school tournament. The UP circuit is pretty healthy, with about 40 schools still participating in WNMU's High School Bowl . Unfortunately, that's a single-elim...

Re: Small Colleges, LACs, and ICT

Very interesting post--can I ask what you teach? Of course. I mainly teach Spanish (all levels, language and literature). Since 2011, I also have had faculty and administrator roles in the NMU Honors Program. In fact, I'm putting together a little proposal for the "idea exchange" at this ...

Re: Small Colleges, LACs, and ICT

In short, I'm curious how we can translate being a "quizbowl adviser" to something that colleges/departments want Good question! At the risk of celebrating and singing myself, it's possible I'm the only person in history to make service as advisor to a collegiate quiz bowl team a major pa...

Re: Michigan Discussion and Schedule 2018-2019

Feel like a trip to the beautiful UP? We (Northern Michigan University quiz bowl) and our friendly rivals at Michigan Tech will, in all likelihood, each host one high school tournament this year, using NAQT questions. Details will be posted here, to be sure. Questions about NMU, NMU Quiz Bowl, or th...

Re: Where Are You Going Next Year? (Collegiate 2016)

I will be attending Michigan Tech in the fall to start an MS in Mathematical Sciences. I do wish to remain involved in quiz bowl while at MTU. That's great news--the Tech team is comprised of very nice folks. They (and the equally-fine people from Lawrence University) came to Marquette a few weeks ...

The Andersons with a hand-held box are the holy grail of buzzers, imo. Another vote for Andersons here. We have five of them, and have had really good response from them when we've needed replacement parts. Somehow I missed the table-top box sets in the past (http://www.andersonbuzzersystems.com/ta...

Re: Michigan Date Claim and Discussion 2015-2016

I just want to say how happy I am that NMU's program is proving to not only be stable and active, but also proactive in spreading quiz bowl in one of the more geographically disadvantageous to quiz bowl places I can think of. I don't know what the state of quiz bowl was previously like in the UP, b...

I'm not sure if any Yoopers read this board, but Northern Michigan University's quiz bowl team has started running high school tournaments. Re: Delta Burke Mirror Tournament (11/15/14) at Purdue

Sorry, I don't think NMU can make it. It's 8 hours of driving and requires some logistical work in advance. We had made hotel and van reservations, I'd asked for money from administration, and I'd told my family I was going to be gone next weekend. Then I got an email from Purdue saying the event wa...

Just a public statement of thanks to Dan and the UWGB staff--I thought this was a very well-run and enjoyable tournament. Things stayed on time, the GB student union is a very nice facility, and the buffet spread for the quizbowlers was much appreciated. The slight shortage of inexperienced moderato...

What I have is this: registration starting at 7:15 am (!), first match starting at 8:00. My understanding is, it's in the University Center. Dan...
