Olmsted Falls, Ohio will be hosting our annual NAQT tournament the first weekend of February, 2013—Olmsted Falls is near Cleveland Hopkins Int'l Airport and is 2.5-3 hours from metro Detroit. Solon, Ohio will likely host a two-day tournament also in February or March—Solon is just to the southeast o...

Re: Quiz Bowl's Systemic Failure At Expansion and Recruitment

In theory, using pyramidal sets for OAC should make the recruitment much easier. In practice, it hasn't translated that way--teams would rather play bad OAC throughout the season and guarantee themselves some points in the category and alphabet rounds than subject themselves to goose eggs at the han...

Re: Quiz Bowl's Systemic Failure At Expansion and Recruitment

In my opinion (admittedly as a non-Missourian) it seems that the most important thing to remember about MOQBA is that they run a lot of great tournaments each year. You know that if you go to a MOQBA event you're going to get an efficiently run event on appropriate questions. Forming groups just to...

Re: Quiz Bowl's Systemic Failure At Expansion and Recruitment

To circle back a bit to the expansion and recruitment subject, I will say that I think Ohio as a circuit is notably bad at this, and I've been thinking of ways to remedy the situation to no avail. I'm thinking an organization like the MQBA would be a big help and now that I am done with school, I'd ...

We haven't participated in NHBB nationals, but have participated in some of the local events, so take the following with whatever amount of salt you require. Is there really a need for a third 20/20 national tournament? To me, the unique format is one of the selling points of the NHBB. If NHBB natio...

Attitude is everything. At both DCC and Olmsted Falls, we've treated quiz bowl as seriously as a sport or the band--you have to show up, you have to do work, or you won't succeed. Ideally, the players challenge one another and the coaches just guide the internal competitiveness and desire to succeed...

Carolyn, The fine folks at Detroit Catholic Central usually host a tournament in Novi at least once a year. As an overall observation, I do think the questions could stand to be slightly shorter, maybe a line or so on average. I think all of the core goals of PACE could be achieved if question length were 6 to 7 lines on average as opposed to 7 or 8, and it would streamline things a bit. I actually do ag...

I don't think it's logisitically feasible, nor is it particularly advisable, to change the packets to suit lower-ranked teams on Sunday.
