Re: Moderators at HSNCT
We ran into situations in two of the rooms we played in where we would be conferring on bonuses at a pretty normal speaking volume which were accepted quickly, even if we did not direct the answer to the moderator. In some of those cases we were trying to use up more time and we were basically shut...

Re: Steering a Team Away From NAC
So Copley is traditionally a team that does go to NAC, i'm not entirely sure why it has been like that but it has been. This year we (as far as I know) are finally not going to go, and it is in large part because apparently we got screwed over last year at Chicago by some horrible handling of an in-...

Re: Quinterest: Hassle-free Database Search
Is the database for bonus questions going to be expanded? The bonus feature could be super useful if there were more questions in it, I feel like a lot of the times when I search in the bonuses I don't get any results

Re: Quinterest: Hassle-free Database Search
I have been experiencing a lot of success using this site over quizbowl db, having all the questions on one page is great for looking things up. One thing I have been experiencing a lot of is repetition of questions A LOT. For example, if you look up Zoroastrianism, you will get 35 results! Wow, so ...

Re: Specialists or Miscellaneous?
This question has been asked a few times before. What you are basically asking is if a team should have 4 generalists or 4 specialists. I think you should take a look at this post below. This link addresses the question of whether one very good player carrying a team is better than 4 specialists, a ...

Re: Quizbowldb Search not functioning
Just to elaborate a little on previous posts, I seem to be successful in finding the questions I was looking for almost all the time by doing a one-word search. As some other people said before me, just pick the most specific word of the answerline. It works better on some answerlines than others, b...

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?
So, basically I would say you shouldn't read a quizbowl-relevant book unless you actually find it interesting. You won't remember things if reading it was an unpleasant experience. Legit knowledge isn't actually very rewarding at all, especially when half the time you're looking for authors. You ca...

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?
To put it shortly, I think learning literature for quizbowl at any level can be summed up in a few steps. 1. Introduce yourself to the canon, whatever level you are it. @Eric, if you think you have the basic HS canon down but are lacking in harder HS tournaments/Early ACF tournaments then go ahead a...

Re: building the strongest team
Typically players know what their strong points are, but if you find that your kids are interested in specializing but don't really know what they should do you could make a test which tests the different major subjects and then assign them specializations accordingly. For example, on our Copley tea...

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?
I would just like to make mention of something in my reply that I don't think i did a very good job of emphasizing. "....and of course reading books/plays/short stories/poems will always beat reading about them " I probably should of stressed that more and if you did take anything my reply...

Re: building the strongest team
If you are trying to take the specialization route with your team, which is always the most effective way to win when done well the first thing you need are willing players. If your players are not determined to study on their own time and try to become better then you as the coach? can only do so m...

Re: Quizbowl Central
When i use the search function sometimes the page doesn't allow me to scroll down without it springing back up, it has exclusively occurred when I received exactly 4 results. It isn't actually that annoying because the majority of the 4th tossup is usually visible without scrolling depending on the ...

Re: Improving Literature Knowledge?
Well I don't really know where your team is as far as your knowledge base but the first step would definitely be making yourself familiar with all the works and authors of the general high school canon. It seems like that would be a lot but it really isn't that hard to just memorize works and author...

Re: High School Skype Open June 29th-30th
I sent you a message but I forgot to include my skype username which is sbfromcopley. Also, how are you going to pick teams between the people who signed up alone? Is it going to be completely random or are you going to try to split up teams evenly based on what you know about each player.

Anytime when there is an adequate amount of people online who are willing to play.
