Re: Writing Women's History

This reminds me of how historians structure chapters about women's history in general. I've always had a dislike for when authors include a "women" chapter in there book. This often happens in textbooks when the writer basically just does the same sort of narrative and then says "oh a...

Re: 2021 WORKSHOP Midwest @ UMN - 3/27/2021

It seems odd to me that Texas is playing this site despite there being a different site on the same day for their region. Looking at that region I can see yeah the field looks not very fun, only three teams currently signed up. But like we have these region restrictions for a reason and them being s...

Re: 2021 ACF Regionals: Global Announcement (January 30)

It seems like a pretty bad outcome that teams might not be able to play regionals because there is no Midwest site. I know my team of mostly new to college players will likely be pretty disappointed if they don't get to play the tournament they submitted a packet to. I for one waited awhile to regis...

As more specific information came in about Angikar today from various sources, we made the decision to have our house team also retroactively forfeit all of their games. (The corrected stats have been uploaded and are located here.) Our club is currently determining the appropriate consequences for...

Re: Stamina during Nationals

I have no credentials to comment on this with any authority. But something that might be relevant is this espn article about stamina during chess tournaments. Basically its the stuff I personally know but don't act on: eat healthy and exercise regularly. I found that when I don't have to focus on ca...

Re: 2019 Early Fall Tournament (EFT)

I'm sorry if my post came off wrong. I posted here because to me this was the most logical place to put it. I was more hoping someone at WUSTL would see it. I was in no way attempting to criticize you Will, I am aware this is the hosts responsibility. I added the part about passing the feuding reque...

We are also coincidentally past the time my club could have requested funding for this tournament. Also the number of new people in my club, unfamiliar with...

Re: Preseason Poll 2019-2020

To my knowledge JHU still has Robert and Eric. While they lose Walter to graduation, Tommy Tripp put up pretty solid numbers at nats (they finished 20th at nats without Robert btw). So unless there is something I don't know they are criminally under ranked.

Re: Please codify eligibility restrictions for your novice tournament

I am hoping that the reason people aren't following the eligibility rules is simply out of ignorance and not out of actual malice. While a host might clearly enumerate eligibility rules and send them out to teams, it is quite possible that the teams are simply not reading or understanding them. I th...

Re: Player Poll 2018: Delightfully Devilish

The purpose of this post is two fold. The first is to draw your attention to Weijia Cheng and Graham Reid. Weijia is an excellent player who deserves a spot on your ballot. His skills are best showcased on difficult content. He's on when it counts the most. This year he got to showcase that in a pos...

Re: How to make college quizbowl less insular

Something I think we could try is after a Fall/novice tournament we could have a sort of new team/player seminar where the host school lays out the resources available maybe talk about how to get money for tournaments, talk about how the season works, and overall just provide a human face to quizbow...

Re: Packets, recordings, and detailed stats warm-up survey

I am interested in looking at the different ways in which writers ask about lit questions, to see the differences in how the are converted. For example a common format for asking about lit would be a "this author question", which typically has less deep clues about individual works, and mo...
