Re: 2015 NHBB/USGO Discussion Thread

I actually ended up in a room of 5 people during the bee, although it could've been 6. At the very least, a couple people who were supposed to play me at some point never showed up, and another was double-registered and played under the other name. At the very least, the latter situation was very av...

Re: 2015 NHBB/USGO Discussion Thread

I must say I'm baffled as to how a hotel can run out of blankets especially when a number of rooms are being converted out of use for guests into use for game rooms. Admittedly, this was "extra" blankets (we asked for one for the rollaway because that only came with a sheet), but we've never encoun...

Alternatively, one could also advantage the best players (giving them an actual incentive to excel during the prelim rounds), such as either giving the very best players a bye right to the semifinals or a (small) head-start in the quarterfinals. Re: 2015 NHBB/USGO Discussion Thread

Something that may actually be very helpful in the bee playoffs would simply be slightly reducing the number of people in each room. This lowers the incentive to guess (you are more likely to be the first to truly know any answer), and should allow for more separation between players (in my quarterf...

This year the second place JV team was unranked coming into Nationals I believe. Right from the start, there were errors with repeats. Round 2 had three exact repeat bonuses from Round 1. Besides those copy-and-paste repeats were a number of factual repeats, like a tossup and bonus on the same person with significant overlap of clues. There were also some really blatant factual...

I’m rather reluctant to post this, but my team had a disappointing experience at this tournament, and it was certainly the worst-run tournament we’ve been to. The tournament was understaffed, poorly run in general, and there were several issues with the question set. Despite the fact that Hunter fou...

I don't get why everyone adores free admission at regionals for a prize, particularly if it's solely for the bee. Regionals is a fraction of the cost of nationals. I'm glad that NHBB is committed to trying to offer cash prizes in 2016 and beyond, and I appreciate the explanation.

Now while I don't compete to win the prize money, it does help in offsetting some of that cost for me--and many others, I'm sure. I don't know if I'm really qualified to say something, but what I have seen many great players do, like Phipps, is take notes on missed tossups/bonuses, to review after tournament. The fact is that Harmony averaged 22.5 ppb on an A-set. I think Middlesex averages about 20. Additionally, although he is basically a one-man team, William Golden is insanely good.

#3, although they have a very good shot at winning. It's hard to argue with the sheer numbers being put up by Kealing and Harmony. If anything Middlesex should have a better chance next year because they have so much depth while returning their top two players.

I was reading at a tournament using NAQT's MS-13 earlier today, and I noticed several (at least five, perhaps as much as 10+, either way it was incredibly noticeable to me and a teammate of mine who was also reading) typos, grammatical errors, and instances where entire words such as "that, of, this...

They "split the squad", essentially, so you're not going to see absolutely incredible numbers from one team. One thing that's often overlooked its the depth that Middlesex has. Although no team averaged more than maybe 25 points per bonus, all 3 of them should be fairly close to that. After all, the...
