I just checked the PACE site to see what Illinois schools have qualified for PACE NSC, and the total is.... zero. I thought this set was very good, though I noticed two errata that I don't think have been mentioned yet: Bonus 16.3 in packet C is written in a confusing way: [10] Description acceptable. I feel like "ox" definitely should have been accepted for the cow tossup. I'm fairly sure that when I read the Odyssey, it referred to "ox-eyed Hera." This was the subject of a result-changing protest in a match at the HS mirror at U Chicago. Initially negged response of 'ox' wa...

I've long maintained that pairing TU/bonuses usually has the unintended consequence of having MORE bonuses in categories where the toss-up is missed, since writers strive to ask about something other than the TU category. So, in a 24 TU match, if 4 math TU go dead because both teams are weak at math...

I just saw this and thought I'd weigh in on the situation in Illinois. Quest is an obvious choice, given Rohan G's performance at IPNCT, but I'm dubious of whether he can defeat teams of 4 with balanced scoring and knowledge, round after round, on Sunday. As a coach who has dealt with comp math for 22 years, the issue with making a computational math question is that you are either writing something that's super easy to complete, and becomes a buzzer race, or something requiring a few steps to arrive at the answer (from yesterday; express 51/120 as a...
