I'm with Brad on this. I've seen a lot of people attempt to run lunch after round 6 at high school tournaments, and it's not been well received by teams. We're currently negotiating to get Durand's site back up. I will keep you updated on how that is working out. In the meantime, I'll make a note of your registration and cancel it if Durand's tournament ends up running after all. Will that work for you?

It's a bad assumption to assume that someone who studied even one semester of French will not remember the most basic premises? The concept that e with an acute accent says "ay" is not difficult to master, and that's all we're talking about here. I'm not talking about memorization of words...

The way my German teacher taught umlauts was to shape your mouth as if you were saying "o," and then say a schwa through it. The result sounds very much like "ur" in English, so I've always just explained it that way; getting people to say "Gurr-tah" is close enough, imo.

Thanks so much for all the ideas. That site looks incredibly useful, and I'll definitely try to make use of it. I like the approach of teaching languages rather than individual words, and I think we'll definitely approach this from that angle.

I'm also going to agree with Jonah. I had a great time. I have a huge amount of respect for Nathan, who managed to run an amazingly fun and efficient tournament for a quiz bowl demographic that really needs more good tournaments like this one. Well done!
