ATC ?
Someone asked about this ATC thing in another thread but I couldn't track it down. So what is the Academic Tournament Council? Will it indeed run its Winter Open on January 29th? Will it be a packet submission tournament? Will its format and distribution resemble those of an ACF Regionals set? Enqui...

I've moderated in both setups, and they seem to work about equally well in my experience. With NAQT questions, even a slow moderator (hopefully) shouldn't take _too_ long to get to 20 tossups, so there usually isn't an enormous lag between rooms with a 20-tossup untimed setup. With inexperienced mod...

As newspaper articles go, the Post did a _relatively_ good job. I'd imagine anyone who's been part of an activity featured in some kind of news story knows how badly they (the reporters and/or editors) usually f*** it up. In this case, we at least get a pretty fair representation of the subculture, ...

I agree with Matt's assessment. The Chicago Open was a very well-written and well-edited tournament. I wish I'd been more prepared for it -- instead I was as flat as a copper monolayer and we lost one close match after another. The field was very balanced top to bottom. Other than a weird blowout lo...

Re: Grammar, etc. in packets
Having just participated in reading/hearing a few recently-released packets in the QB chatroom (I'll leave the names out, though anyone else who saw can share), I have to say I'm pretty perturbed at the lack of attention that was given to basic English structure, grammar, punctuation etc in the edi...

Have there been any tournaments in which that problem has been an issue though? While I definately see that concern, the odds against it are quite stacked. You can make a hypothetical situation to justify any rule, regardless of how likely it is. If you're referring to the protests and total points...

With a few major exceptions, I appreciated and enjoyed most of the readers, especially the fellow from Florida who read our games with DCC and Dorman (Who are you?). It was nice to put a few more faces to userids. BTW, who won the moderators' pool? Till next year. . . The aforementioned moderator w...

With the usual format, I don't think packet submission or question submission would work for a singles tournament. You'd really have to wrench the format around to make it work as a question submission tournament. Hopefully there'll at least be the science tournament. Also, I'd say the 2004 Chicago ...

One correction, or I think it's a correction. After I saw the field list, I tried to recruit Jeff Hoppes as a fourth, but he said (if i understood correctly) that he'd agreed to join the Yaphe/Litvak team. Curses! Foiled again!! Based on that, I'd go with Yaphe's team, R.'s team, and Illinois/Weiner...

Sorry to reply to a topic from over a month ago, but since some members of the collegiate qb community are writing [fill in adjectives of your choice] messages about Georgia's program, I figured I'd revive that filament of the thread. Based on the messages in the Yahoo clubs forum, some readers of t...

Just to address Angelo's comment #3, I'd have to disagree with at least the first part -- as this year's D1 results suggest, I think the NAQT sets were a good gauge of the relative strength of the teams. Berkeley was clearly the strongest, followed by Michigan, Florida, Yale, Maryland, and Illinois,...

In reply to Shai, it depends on the tournament. The true UF A team, the one we'd use for something like the NAQT ICT, is pretty tough to crack. We're missing one of the usual four (Dan) because he's in Vienna, but we'll probably still have our team of 4 grad students (me, Comer, Nordby, and Zahnen) ...

Forgive my inadeptness, but is there some way to check Dwight's list to see who's going where? I couldn't find the way. Nothing important, I was just curious to see who's coming to the University of Florida next year (and for that matter, I'm vaguely curious to see who's going elsewhere, in addition...

In reply to Doug ... arts and classical music is fluff?? NAQT rounds have too much fluff, but arts and classical music is (generally speaking) not what should be defined as fluff. I agree with the emphasis on current events being excessive, and I also noticed the unequal inclusion of computational q...

In reply to Chris White, last year's SE Div II SCT field was much weaker than this year. Last year, the second-place team (Georgia) didn't get a bid, but their numbers were not competitive with other regions; for instance, Georgia's bonus conversion was significantly less than that of Villanova, the...

I'm replying to Lee's post regarding the CC Sectionals. Florida has a lot of strong CC teams, and there's a good chance that all 3 CC at-large bids will go to Florida teams competing tomorrow. Valencia A is probably the favorite to win, but Broward CC, Palm Beach CC, and Valencia B will be good as w...

I too am a little surprised to see only one Div II team from the Southeast get a bid. I hope Athens State gets a shot, but with the ICT in St Louis, I wouldn't expect nearly as many teams to decline bids this year. Athens State was probably hurt by their bonus conversion, but they did put up a lot o...

Just stumbled upon this thread while sitting at home on the tail end of a case of pneumonia ... in reference to the Valencia CC tournament on Feb 14th, I believe it's exclusively for CC teams. It's a CC qualifier for the NAQT ICT. And now, of course, it's about 38 hours away, so it would be too late...

Dan, I'm not sure if I'm reading your notation correctly, but in the Southeast, Emory would go in as an at-large team, not an undergrad team. They had planned to play as an undergrad team but changed their minds, I think. USF B was the top undergrad team in the Southeast Div I, but I don't know if t...
