My quick count shows 204 teams at SCT (including 46 community college teams) and 52 at ACF Regionals (including 1 high school team). That (1 high school team) happen to win the Southeast Regional. Actually for Much of the day, MLK high school was represented by two players Dallas and Cody Simmons. ...

That said, I'm frankly just flat-out annoyed by the turnout for this tournament at several sites. Here we have an accessible and well-edited set and lots of teams apparently aren't interested in playing it. What the hell is going on? It's particularly annoying to me in light of hearing people for t...

Quizbowl at the University of South Florida is proud to announce: Sun 'n Fun IX: The Medusa Laughs Again or Breaking the Curse of the Ninth …we hope It will be held on the University of South Florida's Tampa Campus on Saturday, May 10th, 2008 . -First off, even 26/26 is rare. ACF and the tournaments most directly related to ACF only ask for 24/24 now. 30/30 happened one time, three years ago. Rare but increasingly common, for example ACF Nationals is requesting 26/26, Moon Pie is 25/25. -As recently as the beginning of my own quizbowl car...

I think Seth's and Ryan's interchange has isolated an ongoing phenomena in quizbowl that has been growing for the past number of years. The increasingly pecuniary nature of tournaments has created an economy where arguably there was not one before, i.e. packet submission and tournament attendance. H...

Packet Submission Requirements: The High Cost of Quality
Packet submission requirements are becoming more intense I feel, and though these measures were instituted in large part to insure higher packet quality, they are becoming quite challenging. Some tournament editors are requiring as many as 26/26 questions be submitted for a full packet and as penalt...

Just a few points: Let me preface my remarks by saying that at the FSU Mirror, a reader snafu resulted in a number of the later packets being read near the beginning of the tournament, so there was a sudden variation in difficulty, which I must admit colors my view of the tournament. I would also li...

I wonder if there is some consideration to be given to the difference between originally submitted tossup length and final edited tossup length. For those individuals who find themselves in the occasionally unenviable position of being a tournament editor, do you believe it is more efficient for you...

So after reading the debate I have a few points that I believe I can take from this to improve the next set: Namely, extreme vigilance when it comes to allowing non-canonical tossups to stay in the packet. I am all for introducing new information to the canon, and I operate under the assumption that...

My initial reaction and comments: These answers seem fairly reasonable - perhaps a bit on the hard side, but not too out of line. Some others, like Gamelan, have no business being a tossup but could work as a hard part of a bonus, and some seem like they shouldn't even be anywhere in a packet. Did p...

Writing and Editing questions involving Equations/Math
Hello, If there is already a post on this topic I could be directed to it that would be most helpful, but I was wondering if there are some standardized, or in lieu of explicit standards, handy methods for explaining to the moderator how to read an equation or math question. For example if I want a ...

One minor complaint from the 2007 Moon Pie is that two of the packets that weren't used were actually pretty good, and I wish they had been used instead of the one with questions on the Koran and left-handedness, and that one with the Lord of the Flies tossup. Due to the variety of packets, there w...

BULLETIN Is everyone from the VT team alright? (FrEdit: Yes)
Hello,
I know this is very off topic, but I wanted to ask about the Virginia Tech team, and make sure everyone is okay. My dad is a professor in Norris at the time of the shooting, and I was concerned.
My thoughts and prayers go out.

Thank you for putting on the Science Monstrosity. The format was quick and rapid fire, and I had a great time. I enjoyed the questions immensely, especially the "phaser" tossup. Also, mad-props on the "Logic of Scientific Discovery" answer.
