State College will be there with two teams and a buzzer, along with the ability to spontaneously generate a third team if necessary. The teams will be along the lines on B and C

Re: Chicago Open thanks and discussions

I don't know if anyone really cares about question inaccuracies or whatnot, but in the Alexius Comnenus question, the first clue about the Pechenegs is pretty vague, considering Byzantines fought Pechenegs for hundreds of years; saying this ruler "defeated the Pechenegs" isn't really helpf...

Wikipedia:
Purgly and Horthy met thanks to fortune. Not only did the uniform made Miklós Horthy an arresting man - he travelled all around the world, and had an ability to tell stories about distant lands colourfully. The affection was mutual, and Horthy felt he had found someone valuable.

Re: Post-Nationals Poll - Congrats State College!

Let me just say that Southside is really underrated on this poll, probably because some people left them off altogether. Even without Amit, they were one of the best teams in the country... at GSAC for example, Ming and Ben played us to the last toss up. I just wanted to give them a shout out becaus...

Having just taken AP US, I can say that both in class, in textbooks, and in review books, the Stono rebellion was mentioned several times individually, whereas Vesey (if he was mentioned, I can't recall) must have just been in a list of slave revolts. I'm not inferring anything, I just thought that ...

At the NSC, there was a toss-up on Cuban literature that began with a plot description of an Alejo Carpentier work, either The Lost Steps or Explosion in a Cathedral, I forget which. Anyway, I'd studied Carpentier recently and immediately recognized the clue, but I couldn't buzz because I didn't kno...

Re: Bounceback Theory, NSC and Elsewhere

Personally, I'm a big fan of bouncebacks-- I can't see them slowing down the game more than a few minutes, as Cody said. As far as Mr Blessman's first point, the point of quizbowl is to reward knowledge, in my mind anyway, and bouncebacks provide more of an opportunity to do so. As far as his second...
