Re: Recommendation for a national tournament.
Assuming this thread doesn't get moved to New HS Teams, which it might, there are a couple criteria to look at. Both are going to have really good questions and tournament planning barring some sort of debacle, don't worry about that. PACE is harder. PACE is also going to be closer to you. PACE pull...

I noticed when we played you that you guys were not conferring very well. Especially without bouncebacks, localize your thoughts. You might jar or make some connection that gives you the answer.

Re: Illinois '13-'14
P.S. Coach Prince, I don't know what you mean by a "captainless" Bloomington. Isn't Alston the team captain? He was there, and I believe he got all (or all except one)of the tossups for his team when we played them. P.S.S. And, yes, we were missing our #3 player, Will. While we don't foll...

Re: Illinois '13-'14
Was anyone surprised by the results? Any predictions confirmed or changed? I was impressed by Stevenson. Everyone knew they were good, but going undefeated in the finals in that pool is quite a feat. I predicted Stevenson would win, and it did not surprise me that they went undefeated along the way...

My team appreciated the lack of trash. It really sucks to have trash decide a match. I felt that the religion was a bit too heavy on Christianity. It did not feel like even other abrahamic religions were getting much coverage. Was this intentional?

Re: Distribution
It should be noted that a large amount of Ursula K. LeGuin's work is not, in fact, children's or YA lit. Genre lit is not the same as kid lit, and while there are certainly arguments against including genre lit, those aren't really the same as those against kid lit. LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darknes...

Just wondering, although this is obviously a low priority, would it be possible to make the database searchable by the tournament the question came from?

Just gonna throw in my two cents, having seen some players at ACE. I don't really like ranking prepay, so I'm just gonna throw out some stuff I've seen. Stevenson shouldn't be underestimated. Jason is quite good, and they have at least one other good player here (whose name I have forgotten, sorry)....

Re: IHSA 2013
One of the most influential philosophers of the nineteenth century is a 'hard' part? Listen, I'm talking about intentions, not actuality. There were plenty of bonuses that did not really have a hard part. I just am going off of the general idea that the most tangentially related part is normally in...

I am not sure how they linked Kierkegaard to Nietzsche, but ok. In that case, Kierkegaard could have been considered the hard part. Either way, I probably would have picked Ecce Homo or The Gay Science or even something about "god is dead" or Apollonian vs Dionysian but w/e.

Re: IHSA 2013
The issue has rather little to do with the audience the set is aimed at-- regardless of how knowledgeable the teams are, the bonuses should not be of uniform difficulty. In terms of what you actually knew of that bonus, it's either going to be zero or thirty, because anyone who knows enough about N...

Freya's chariot, unless I'm mistaken, is actually pulled by leopards, and I was greatly dismayed when my answer wasn't accepted. They are cats, although I did not hear that bonus. I felt that a lot of these questions, while written in a manner that would be easy to someone with base knowledge of the subject material, fell outside of the canon. The question difficulty felt variable, but that can be blamed on the fact that the questions in general were short and some were not t...

(Not an expert here; correct if wrong)
If you could have a team where everyone was good at everything, it would be great. That, however, is not going to happen, so it is better to have everyone put their effort into one specific category.

A side idea kind of relevant to this would be creating a room in which users can submit their own questions (with their intended difficulty, subject, etc.) and others can playtest them and provide feedback. I endorse this idea. There is also the possibility of user accounts, although I've heard tha...

Unfortunately, as far as I know we can't discuss specific questions, but Bloomington has not really been a very power-y team in the past, so for us to have our tournament's highest number of powers is a tad bit surprising.
