I don't know. I think Whitman's got a case against them.

Re: Is Virginia NAQT States still on??

From what I have:

Gov A 415 - TJ C 160
TJ C 245 - Collegiate 200
TJ C 260 - Cave Spring 155
TJ B 280 - TJ C 180

But yeah, there were a lot of upsets this time around.

I can tell you that TJ is sending 5-6 teams, we think.

Re: DACQ Weekend of Quizbowl Goodness: BYO Dagger (3/15/08) @GMU

I don't have a dog in the fight (and I also have no idea if the two teams played prior to the mini-game), but head-to-head followed by PPG is the standard tiebreaker procedure throughout the Southeast, and in almost every non-quiz bowl type competition. Assuming the original winner loses the rematc...

Re: DACQ Weekend of Quizbowl Goodness: BYO Dagger (3/15/08) @GMU

Um, why was TJ C in Division I and St. Anselm's in Division II? I'm pretty sure that the entire point of having TJ C in DII was to allow it to advance to NAQT Nationals. (N.B. I was only there for Saturday) I don't think there were enough teams to allow for a functional two-division system. In theor...

Re: NAQT card-basd power-matching system

Not really. When I made my brackets, I didn't use any Swiss Pair groups. I just had teams play other teams with as close of a record as I could while trying to avoid repeats.

Re: NAQT card-basd power-matching system

Ideally, you'll want the number of teams to be greater than or equal to the number of rounds. In addition, it's much better if the number of teams are a multiple of a nice power of two (16, 32, 48, etc), since the number of mis-matched games go down considerably. If the number of teams are not divis...

Re: Lit Singles Playoff Format

Format was triple-elimination, and that seemed to work very well. I don't think anyone's done the "Buzz-a-Trois" format since, but I could be mistaken. Everyone was in until you hit your third loss (meaning you did not win the 1-on-1-on-1 matchup, kinda like how Jeopardy does it). I think...

Coming from someone who was on C team for this particular tournament (16th seed FTW!), I'll have to say that there seemed like a sparsity of history and geography as opposed to Lit/ Music/ Fine arts. Of course, that could possibly be me being a math/science/geo/history person, but that seemed to be ...

Basically I looked at how many wins (on average) each card would have and then I paired teams with equal (or as equal as possible) records. I recalculated the number of wins teach team would have, and then repeated until round 7.

Is there any chance that the spreadsheet used for the card system could be posted? I am very interested to see how the pairings worked, especially in the later rounds. Yes there is. During the fiasco of teams dropping out at the last minute, I also have a card system set up for 42, 44, and 48 teams...

Does anybody know what happened with teams switching seeds in the playoffs? Because that was weird and not supposed to happen. Also, I'm glad to hear that the card system worked out well. Sorry about having teams play each other twice, but that's probably going to happen near the top, as there are f...

It better be, considering how many times I've had to redo the spreadsheet. Note however that it will be far from perfect, especially in the latter rounds, since teams with mismatched records have to play each other starting in the third round.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wouldn't you want around 128 teams to have 7 Swiss-paired rounds work out nicely, as in your Option 1? Given that, I like your options 2 and 3, and have considered implementing such a format for our spring tournament to provide more games since we don't do Friday n...
