Re: 2022 ACF Regionals - Specific Question Discussion

I really like the idea behind this Haydn tossup's clues, reflecting him being a towering figure among contemporaries, including the other leading Germanic composers of the era. That being said, I think there are a couple of issues: 1) Evasiveness. Ophir's guide on this topic is instructive here. Is...

Re: How much "world" should there be in art?

4. In terms of the player pool, I think that anecdotes about people's interactions with particular cultures of world music, while certainly relevant, miss the point. Do they interact with multiple cultures in that way? Do they have close to the same amount of knowledge of the entire body of reasona...

Re: How much "world" should there be in art?

As someone who's both made strides in increasing inclusion in the HS sets and dislikes how this is done in many sets, I'll offer my input: 1. Quiz bowl is played in a western society, and that is okay. Sets that are written for audiences in other regions should 100% cater to the local histories, cul...

Re: How much "world" should there be in art?

On a similar note, I believe we, as a community, should create a more general "types of answerline" list linked to appropriate "pronoun phrases." This would help with world art, where, instead of the standard "groups of instruments" questions, we could ask about: piece...

Re: 2021 Penn Bowl Specific Question Discussion

Amusingly, I buzzed on the "stratified lakes" tossup with "meromictic" right before the tossup said "which are called meromictic" and was negged for that. This was at least partly my fault for ever thinking that that would be a primary answerline, but that should proba...

Re: 2021 Penn Bowl General Discussion

I really enjoyed the world history in this set; I thought it was done creatively and in a way that emphasized topics from older world history that often don't get asked about in as much detail as they should. I also really loved the questions that were about the intersections of myth and culture, es...

The writers of this set have no reason to believe that there will not be a high school BHSAT 2023 set. I am led to understand that nobody involved with this project contacted the current Yale team to discuss this potentially confusing conflict of set names, which seems like an oversight. Just to co...

Re: 2021 ACF Fall: Global Announcement (October 16)

I have absolutely no stake in this, but the high school nationals eligibility rules seem to have the effect of letting many top specialists/players with substantial shadow effects play while being very harsh on top players of lower-placing teams. Just for an example, half of PACE-finalist Hunter A w...
