Re: Should "Shakespeare" be prompted if looking for "Hamlet?

I think as long as the correct answer is given in a blitz, with correct extraneous information, then it should be correct. I don't know how it's a conundrum; it's pretty straightforward. If there's a clue about Hamlet given, and it says "this author" at the beginning of the question, "...

Re: Should "Shakespeare" be prompted if looking for "Hamlet?

Apparently part of the fun of quizbowl is having to pay attention on questions for the right pronoun, so to answer your question, no. Otherwise giving the answer as "Shakespeare" on a hard Hamlet answer line tossup shows "real knowledge". Some questions are intentionally written...

Re: High School Quizbowl Podcast

This podcast was great! I really enjoyed listening. I'm not surprised that Ithaca got skipped when talking about the Northeast circuit, because not many people know who we are. I don't know if you're going to do any more reviews of teams, but if you do, I can give you a bit of information about us (...

Re: Improving in Philosophy

I've mostly memorized stock clues on philosophy, using Quinterest and Protobowl to help me practice. I use quizlet and put each work or description of something on a flash card with the philosopher's name on the other side, and quiz myself like that. It really helps for things that come up a lot, li...

I didn't make the iOS or Android apps, but the creator says that there is currently a bug which causes it to crash on iOS6, but that it's designed to support both iOS 6 and 7 and th...

Re: NY/NJ/CT Dates Claims, 2013-14

BrainBusters Fall is being held on December 7th, not November 9th.

EDIT: It's also probably worth adding that the Rochester Area NHBB competition will be held on February 8th, 2014.

Re: Foreign-language answers

Although I'm a competitor and not a reader, if I was a reader, I would probably believe in strict interpretation of the answer line. So if someone answered Ivan Grozny, which I had never heard of as an acceptable name for Ivan the Terrible, I'd probably say that it was wrong. I'm sorry - I didn't k...

Re: Pre-tournament Routines

I wish I had an interesting and quirky pre-tournament routine to share, but I don't. I just eat or drink something and start madly, idiosyncratically bobbing my leg like I always do. .-.

Re: Improving as a geography player?

I memorized all of the world's capitals just because I wanted to, and I have to say it has helped in some situations. I recall getting a Brunei tossup on Bandar Seri Begawan (I didn't know anything else about the country though, haha). I definitely want to learn geography just so I can connect it to...

Re: NJ/NY 2013-2014

I actually did see Bethlehem perform at our NHBB regionals in December - they did really, really well. I was actually quite impressed. I'm sure we can build up a mean friendly rivalry with them. Their B team of two placed first in the JV level, but I'm sure we can beat them if we work hard eno...

Re: Natl History Bowl Middle School Nationals 5/18-19 (DC/N VA)

Will the set be posted after its use in Europe? No, though it will likely be available for sale once it's been tightened up (meaning the above issue and a few other things are fixed). In other news, I was very happy with how the logistics of this tournament went - everything ran on or ahead of sche...

NHBB middle school

At middle school nationals, there were a couple of typos and badly written questions. For example, in a lightning round, the clue was something like "longest living President, who served in the 70's" and the team answering said "Reagan". Wrong, right? He didn't serve in the 70's!...

Re: quizbowldb.com not working

On both Opera and Mozilla Firefox, it seems to work like normal until you try to buzz in. Then, the enter button won't do anything; you can't submit a response. Any amount of waiting won't yield an automatic response either. I don't know what the cause of this is, but I like practicing specific ques...
