Re: LaTeX and packets
I'm exploring the possibility of using Drupal but I haven't had much experience with it so I don't know how feasible it is. I don't know either, but I'd be willing to learn in order to contribute to a similar effort. First off, does anyone know what our strengths are? Drupal looks good because it's...

Preaching to the choir, Jerry. EDIT: To clarify, I am probably the only member of this choir. Having previously been of the silent whomever, I suppose now is a good time to join said choir publicly. That said, I think this thread is already winding into the inevitable conclusion that there is a hap...

Re: The Best Writers
Congratulations to Matt, who really does deserve some credit. Also, thank you to two editors whose willingness to praise I hope starts a trend in recognizing and rewarding good writing. Finally, Paul Gauthier will be at Chicago next year, so one sincerely hopes that he'll stay with quizbowl and beco...

Re: QBDB thread
I do not have any packet libraries of my own but am happy to format. If you have tournaments you'd like added but don't have time to clean them up, feel free to send them to kathryn dot e dot peters at gmail.

Re: Converting JPEGs of Packets to PDFs
Tesseract, last I checked, didn't handle .jpegs.ezubaric wrote:http://sourceforge.net/projects/tesseract-ocr
Still, the number of convenient open-source print-to-pdf converters out there should make this a simple process. I've had good luck with PDF Creator: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

Re: return (sorta) of the question database
what's the database structure on this? can there be a table of categories that users can then help link to questions? it seems like the basic principle should be easy enough considering the limited number of tags we would need...

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: ICT Warmup @ Maryland - 4/5/08
Also, if anyone has additional space, my original housing plans fell through. I sleep pretty much anywhere and am quite talented at nesting with spare hotel bedding, as former Vandy teammates will attest. If you can offer something for either Friday or Saturday nights, please let me know at kathryn ...

Re: Distance Proofreading
seriously, good copy-editing doesn't need to be such a high-stakes endeavor. an outside proofreader is a good idea, but for this to be feasible you really need to have finished content-editing by a reasonable hour the night before, with proofing left for the wee hours. If you don't have your rounds ...

Re: 24 hours of quizbowl
I'll volunteer to staff the whole 24 hours and would also edit, say, lit packets for duplicates, etc. (not so much on the content, but still a vast improvement over going unedited, no?)

There is an alternative archive program for Macs that is free and solves the interface problem. One of the Penn moderators helpfully pointed it out to all the people using Macs on Saturday. I don't know what it is, but if someone can track her down and ask, that would be very helpful. For future re...

that's not rude. my name is katy, and I played for rock bridge quiz bowl back in high school before joining the vanderbilt team, with whom I competed until I graduated in may. I'd quit following this board over the past few months because work kept me very, very busy, but after a whirlwind trip to n...

Nice to know there are missourians on the board nowadays...and even better to know Rock Bridge still has a team at all. I'm sorry I didn't get to tell NKC hello at ABC a few weeks ago, but I kind of dropped in last-minute to run JV. Thanks for coming--it's only the second time I can personally remem...

Just so no one can claim the opposition is always a silent one: Quit insulting the barbershop quartet tossup! It was my only power all tournament, because The Usual Suspects is an awesome movie which more people should have seen and remembered. For general trash, it was a fun question, if somewhat r...

I won't complain about having Saturday evening in DC, but most of our team have Friday classes that got skipped because of travel arrangements. When you have teams driving long distances and even flying, asking them to be ready to play at 6pm is inevitably going to mean that many of them will miss t...

As an approximately third-year quizbowl participant at Vanderbilt, I'd like to encourage someone to write that guide. My freshman year, I did submit a packet for our high-school tournament and wasn't asked to contribute beyond that (looking back, it was a fairly terrible round). We don't ask freshme...
