Re: Best Song of the 1970s Bracket

Bohemian Rhapsody -- Look, it's Bohemian Rhapsody, it's the #1 seed for a reason. There's a lot that can be said about this song, but I'm going to save it for a more worthy matchup. Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood -- This is a good three-minute song. Unfortunately, its runtime is listed as 10:29. Rid...

Re: Best Song of the 1970s Bracket

No commentary this time unfortunately, except to say that I'm sad that Pink Floyd's entry is essentially the postscript to Time. It's not Pink Floyd's entry; it's Claire Torry's entry, featuring Pink Floyd. Torry completely improvised the vocals on her own. In my mind, it's one of the best performa...

Re: Best Song of the 1970s Bracket

Stay with Me -- I usually find Rod Stewart's voice grating, but it works really well with the guitar. I find the whole "invite a girl for a one-night stand" song concept kinda tired, admittedly. Rapper's Delight -- Rap is a genre that I don't really have too much interest in, but I have a...

Re: Best Song of the 1970s Bracket

Cruel to Be Kind -- It's a very catchy pop song, but it's one that gets old quickly, as with many songs that are about two-thirds chorus. It's also poor life advice. Goodbye Stranger -- Breakfast in America, and this song in particular, is solid despite not really being stand-out in any way. Doctor, My Eyes -- Jackson Browne is one of those artists whose music I keep forgetting I really enjoy. The song isn't tremendously deep, but it's by no means exceedingly shallow either. Finally, I get to have opinions about 70s music! Heart of Glass -- This song manages to combine new wave and disco and top it off with great vocals. If you're running a tournament with a different number of teams that needs byes and doesn't, let me know and I can quickly whip up a schedule. In other news, I have a Patreon if you want to support me.

Note that NAQT (IS-###X) sets have 13 packets, but they (historically, at least) do a poor job of ensuring hosts are aware of this option. For the record, our current policy is that we ask every host if they would prefer the 13-packet version of the set. (and more generally, we switched from 14-pac...

One mitigating factor of going to 3x12 -> 6x6 is that one fewer tiebreaker game has to be played, which means over a round's worth of time doesn't have to be spent confirming records and playing lunchtime tiebreakers. You'd only need one additional packet's worth of questions and time, not two.
