Conserve and Rufus King were very good last year, but five teams from Wisconsin is almost a majority. There are fewer than 20 Scholastic Bowl schools in Wisconsin, and more than 500 in Illinois. Conserve and Rufus King did well at NU, but the team that simultaneously took 1st and 4th at NU last year...

My response to gosaints-- The problems many coaches have with Northwestern is that it is sometimes disorganized (one year especially so, though it sometimes is exceptionally well organized), it charges more than other tournaments, it often lasts too long, and the format/questions are not what we are...

Schools banned national tournaments and practicing outside of season because they didn't like losing by 300 points to teams that practiced out of season. Those same schools are still losing by 300 points if they are still competing at all. I hope that more Illinois teams will enter national tourname...

I generally agree with what's been said. Keep track of who answers how many tossups, and play the kids who answer the most. You may decide not to count rebounds. Don't keep track of negs. It is rare when a kid consistently negs so much that it becomes a problem, and the rare kid that does usually ha...

I saw it happen once, though it was several years ago and I forget the exact details. The TD announced in the morning that A Teams should be better than B Teams. One of the top players in Illinois was on a B Team because that team's coach perceived that his A Team had a tougher bracket. Even though ...

In my opinion, which is nothing more than my opinion, I would have about one-third pre-1900, about one-third 1900-1950, and about one-third post-1950 for the prose. I would slant the poetry a little bit more towards older works. In terms of genre, I would have a little under half about novels and no...

My sense is that quiz bowl questions in social studies cover a broader range of topics than quiz bowl questions in lit and fine arts. You are not going to become strong in social studies just by learning some lists and reading a few articles (though you might get a little bit better). It is possible...

Can't we all just get along? If you're at a tournament with bad questions, then guess away if it helps you win. If you write questions or pick which tournaments your team goes to, then avoid that Danish astronomer junk. If you want to practice such questions because you go to tournaments that use th...
