Re: HS teams playing college tournaments

Easily the most interesting question raised in this thread was Michael Arnold asking if high schools teams would actually be that good at ACF Nats level, and do they deserve the rankings they got? I assumed that the rankings were in order of prospective ACF Nats performances, and ranked accordingly;...

Re: QuAC II at UPenn in Phila., PA (11/21/09)

I thought conventional wisdom said that author toss-ups are more vulnerable to list knowledge, not necessarily deep knowledge? Not if they're well written to include plots and characters in the meat of the tossup and only include the titles at the end of the question. Well, no. Memorizing character...

Re: QuAC II at UPenn in Phila., PA (11/21/09)

I personally like author toss-ups, because they reward arguably deeper/more difficult (maybe I'm not expressing this well) knowledge, and at the same time are ultimately more gettable than work tossups. My personal opinion would be that work tossups (in high school) would be both substantially easie...

I think there is enough distinction between teams the a 6 team playoff bracket would work just fine, and probably be more exciting for both the top 6 and 7-12. I hope this prompts you to epiphany

Re: Bias towards named things in science: does it hurt the canon

The greater tragedy is that things without names do not come up. E.g. there was a war in Italy in the 19th century that saw battles at Solferino and Magenta. It is super important. But it will never be a TU answer because it has no name. Same for the war that ended with San Stefano. I had heard Fra...
