The 2018 Scottie

Post by Scottietodd »

Hello to all,

I am happy to announce that the 2018 Scottie will be held at Glasgow High School in Glasgow, Kentucky on Saturday, August 25, 2018.

The Scottie is a house-write by GHS students and staff. Todd Garrison (GHS Coach) and Tyler Reid (New GHS coach and former UK Quizbowl) will oversee the house-write. Additional editors and contributors will include but are not limited to Ramapriya Rangaraju (University of Louisville), Olivia Kiser (University of Chicago) and Neelav Dutta (University of Kentucky). The intended difficulty level is just at or below regular high school difficulty, but hey, it's a house-write, so we may miss the mark a bit. We DO intend on being closer to regular difficulty on bonuses than last year :)

The tournament will follow the traditional format of twenty tossups and twenty bonuses and will include powers and negs.

Each packet will feature the following content:

4/4 History: American, British/Anglo, European, World/other.
4/4 Literature: American, British, European, World/other.
4/4 Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Other (Math, Ecology, etc..)
3/3 Fine Arts: Music, Visual, Other
2/2 RMP: Religion, Mythology, Philosophy
1/1 Geography
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Current Events/Pop Culture

The tournament will consist of pool play in the morning rounds followed by a regrouping or playoff format that will be determined by the number of teams entered. Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of 9 games and we will seek and expect to receive Platinum status from PACE which means that 25% of the field would qualify for PACE. We will award the top 4 teams, the top Small School team, the top true JV team, and the top 10 individuals from preliminaries. The field will be capped at 36 teams and we expect to fill up quickly, so we will limit each school to two teams initially. We will accept more than two teams from a school if the tournament is not full by August 15th. If you wish to go ahead and let me know that you would like additional teams, those teams will be at the front of the line after August 15th.

We will continue our tradition of having onsite food options for all students (and parents) so that all coaches and staff can enjoy our awesome hospitality room. Bottled water will be free and available throughout the tournament and soft drinks will also be provided free for all participants during the lunch hour.

The fee for each team will be $70 and there will be a $5 discount for each working buzzer system per team entered. Please email me at [email protected] to reserve a spot for the tournament and receive additional information as the tournament approaches.

We hope that you will join us for the 2018 Scottie!
