Quaker Bowl--10/22/2011

Post by smithp5 »

*This is the full announcement for the Quaker Bowl--10/22/2011*

The Academic Team at The Early College at Guilford is pleased to announce that we will host the 3rd Quaker Bowl on Saturday, October 22, 2011. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend.

The tournament will take place on the Guilford College campus, in Greensboro, North Carolina. The opening meeting will take place in Dana Auditorium, and the matches will take place in various buildings on the campus.

AFFLIATION AND QUESTIONS: We will use NAQT Invitational Questions, particularly NAQT set #IS-107. The tournament will serve as an unofficial NAQT event, and as such, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship. We are also looking to affiliate with the PACE National Tournament, and tournaments run or co-run by The Early College at Guilford Academic Team have been certified as gold tournaments for three straight years.

FORMAT: We are looking to host a tournament with 30 teams. The teams will be divided into preliminary brackets, and then will be rebracketed into playoff brackets. More information about the exact format will be released as we get closer to the date. Each team will be guaranteed to play 9 games. In the event that fewer than 30 teams register, the format will change accordingly. All teams will be offered a minimum of 9 games in any format. Trophies will be awarded to the top teams, and book prizes will be awarded to the top eight individual scorers. Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions. We will have powers and negs at the Quaker Bowl, but no bouncebacks on bonuses.

REGISTRATION: To register, please e-mail me, Paul Smith, at ecgquizbowl AT gmail.com with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and e-mail address where we may contact you. You may also register using our online system on our tournament website: http://www.gcsnc.com/education/club/clu ... lid=236278.
Soon after you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and a packet mailed from The Early College at Guilford Academic Team containing the official rules, directions, parking and dining information (all materials which will also be provided on the day of the competition). Again, registration fees may be mailed in advance for a discount (with the registration sheet) or paid at the tournament. Checks should be made out to “The Early College at Guilford.” For the purposes of tournament organization, our registration will run until October 7th—please send in your registration information by that date.

FEE STRUCTURE:
Base fee: $75 per team. We will initially only take one team per school until September 23rd. Please indicate in your registration that you’d like to bring multiple teams, and we will let you know if there are open spots after September 23rd for 2nd teams.
Buzzer discount: $10 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)-maximum of two buzzer systems
Staff discount: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score for various games not involving the team with which they are affiliated. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. You may have only one staffer count for your discount.
Early payment discount: $10 off school’s total fee. If you submit your payment before the date of the tournament, we will take off $10 from your school’s fee.
Travel discount: $15 off school’s total fee for travelling over 150 miles (as determined by MapQuest).
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you cannot have a negative fee)

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay on or before the day of the tournament. We would prefer that you send in your payment before the tournament, but will also accept payment in person right before the tournament starts. Teams who do not pay on or before the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it. We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or Quiz Bowl club funds.

HOTELS: We are in the process of making a deal with local hotels. Please contact Paul Smith (e-mail below) if you are interested or would like a hotel.

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time, with no exceptions. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players. Teams consisting of fewer than three players may not play without my express prior permission.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. The Quaker Village shopping area is within walking distance of the tournament, and we will be working closely with the eating establishments in this shopping area to offer deals to teams competing in our tournament; maps and suggestions will be provided at the tournament and in e-mails sent to the teams before the tournament.

We look forward to seeing your team at the 3rd Quaker Bowl!

Brief results. More detailed results will soon follow.

Note: we played 5 preliminary rounds and rebracketed for playoffs (6 teams in three tiers and a bottom consolation bracket for remaining teams). In the top bracket, 3 teams tied at 3-2 in the afternoon playoff brackets, and 3 teams tied at 2-3. Rather than distinctly break the tie by PPB (or some other stat), we seeded all of the teams in the following way based on W/L and then afternoon PPB. (We also needed to determine 4th place for national-bid purposes). The two lower seeds in each section then played for the right to play the top seed.

(1) East Chapel Hill (3-2, 21.25 PPB)
(2) Enloe A (3-2, 20.20 PPB)
(3) NCSSM A (3-2, 19.38 PPB)
(4) Raleigh Charter A (2-3, 19.00 PPB)
(5) Raleigh Charter B (2-3, 18.14 PPB)
(6) Green Hope A (2-3, 17.50 PPB)

Game results:
(3) NCSSM A defeats (2) Enloe A 400 - 310
(3) NCSSM A defeats (1) East Chapel Hill 360 - 185

(6) Green Hope A defeats (5) Raleigh Charter B 305 - 260
(4) Raleigh Charter A defeats (6) Green Hope A 310- 195

Congratulations to all teams who came out for a great tournament. Congratulations are also in order to NCSSM A for coming in first, and East Chapel Hill, Enloe A, and Raleigh Charter A who will receive bids to HSNCT. More detailed stats are forthcoming.
