Blacksburg High School Scholastic Bowl Fall Kickoff

Post by mithokie » Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:19 pm

Blacksburg High School is hosting the inaugural Scholastic Bowl Fall Kickoff on Saturday, November 12, 2011.

This event is open to VHSL member schools only, and will be played on VHSL regular season sets 21-28. The event is not a tournament. We want to let schools that do not usually participate in the weekend circuit have a chance to attend a weekend event where they can see the benefits of playing several quizbowl matches on a Saturday, and thereby potentially grow the SWVA circuit.

Teams are asked to provide buzzers and a reader for their team at the competition. As the event is a bit informal, the team's own readers will be asked to follow their team and read for half of their 8 scheduled matches.

Registration forms were mailed to schools within an 1.5 hour radius of Blacksburg HS. If you did not get an invitation, but would like one, please feel free to e-mail me (address in signature).

The cost of registration is as follows:
Registration Fee: $5
Reader Fee (If you are unable to provide your own reader): $50

Food: Concessions style lunch will be served in the break between the 4 morning rounds and the 4 afternoon rounds. Prices and menu have yet to be determined, but this information will be updated when they are.

Field (8):
Blacksburg
Cave Spring
Christiansburg
Eastern Montgomery
Galax
Hidden Valley
Rockbridge County
Salem

We are a few days away

Information e-mail sent to coaches this morning follows:

Coaches,

We are making final preparations for the Fall Kickoff at Blacksburg High School on Saturday.

DIRECTIONS:
Please make sure that you are using the current location of Blacksburg High School at 3109 Price's Fork Road in Blacksburg, VA. Some mapping software may have the old address on Patrick Henry Drive. If you need help with directions, please let me know and I can get them to you.

SCHEDULE:
Registration will begin at 8:30 AM. We will have a registration table set up at the main entrance to the school, where we can check in teams and collect registration fees. Teams will be directed to our cafeteria following registration. We are not serving any breakfast items, but there will be coffee available for the coaches. Since most schools are bringing their own readers with them, we will hold a brief rules meeting with the coaches and readers to make sure everyone is comfortable with the rules of play before we begin playing matches. Right now, we have 8 schools registered, so we will play a round robin schedule, with each team playing all other teams. We will play 4 matches before lunch and 3 matches after lunch, and each team will play every round. I anticipate that all matches will be completed by 4:00 PM.

BUZZERS:
We will need at least one team to bring a set of buzzers with them to make the competition go smoothly.

FOOD:
It would be helpful for our lunch planning if you could answer the following questions by Wednesday evening at the latest.
1. How many people will be coming from you school? (Include coaches as well as students)
2. Are there any special dietary restrictions we should be aware of?
We are planning to sell the following: Pizza, Chips, Fruit, Carbonated Bevarages, Water, and Baked Goods for dessert.

ROSTERS:
Can you send us a roster of participating students by Friday? We plan to track individual statistics. It makes statistics tracking much easier if we have the rosters ahead of time. A MEL would be sufficient for this purpose. If you want to fax us a copy of yours, please fax to: Matt Beeken, Blacksburg HS, 540-951-5714.

I have had a few coaches ask if there are any limits to the roster size for the event. There are no roster size restrictions. You can only play 4 students at a time, but there are two opportunities for substitutions in each match, and you may play different line-ups of students for each match as well.

Please let me know if there are any additional questions,

Stats have been uploaded for this event on our database page

http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

I hope all had an enjoyable time. Please note that this event was on regular season VHSL sets, and that the directed rounds were recorded in SQBS as "lightning round." The directed round has 10 questions that are directed toward each team that include conferral and bouncebacks to the opposing team. Otherwise the matches are 30 traditional pyramidal toss-ups with negs, but no power marks (written by HSAPQ).

*** Note that Blacksburg played wildly varying lineups in this event as our number one concern was hosting effectively, and our number two concern was playing lots of kids. ***
