Cal Classic at Berkeley, December 3rd (Minn. Novice mirror)

Post by Important Bird Area »

Berkeley Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce Cal Classic 2011.

Location: This tournament will take place at UC-Berkeley's Dwinelle Hall, on December 3, 2011. Registration will be at 9 AM.

Questions: This will be a mirror of the Minnesota Novice Tournament.

Qualifier opportunities:

This tournament is affiliated with PACE; the top 15% of the field will qualify for the 2012 NSC to be held June 9-10. We will be applying for higher levels of PACE certification, which may offer the opportunity to qualify additional teams.

Teams that perform strongly at this tournament are encouraged to apply for wildcard bids to the 2012 NAQT HSNCT to be held Memorial Day weekend.

Format:

We will run some form of round-robin. Depending on demand, there may be a split into varsity/JV divisions.

This tournament is tentatively capped at 18 teams.

Fees:

$60 base fee
-$10 working buzzer
-$10 scorekeeper
-$10 new to quizbowl

We may consider adding a moderator discount if the field size requires additional staffing help.

Please make checks payable to ASUC/Quiz Bowl Club.

How to register: Please contact Jeff Hoppes (jeff.hoppes (at) gmail.com), indicating how many teams, buzzers, and scorekeepers your school plans to bring.

Field: (6 teams) (updated 12/2)

Registered:
Bellarmine (2) (2 buzzers)
Castro Valley
Crystal Springs
San Leandro (buzzer)
South San Francisco (2 scorekeepers)

Will this be BAAL or ACF format? (I'm assuming since it's non-NAQT that it's probably ACF, but just to confirm.)

Thanks! We're soliciting signups for this tournament right now; I would estimate we'll end up with 2-3 teams, although we could get more.

Email has been sent to the coaches of registered teams with details for Saturday. Just in case anyone reads this thread instead, registration will be at 9 am in 123 Dwinelle.

I will keep the field open until noon tomorrow; it would be great to get (at least) a sixth team and avoid byes.

Edit 12/2: Thank you, San Leandro!

After 10 rounds, Bellarmine A was 9-1 and Crystal Springs was 8-2 (though Crystal Springs played solo from about Round 8 onward after one player underwent anaphylactic shock after consuming almonds during lunch and another player sought medical help for him). One Crystal Springs player returned a little bit into the first game of the advantaged final, giving each team two players. Crystal Springs won by 95 points. The second game is underway.

Crystal Springs wins 215-210 in one of the best matches everyone in this room (Jeff included) says they have ever seen.

As Tanay notes, this was one of the best days of quizbowl I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. (I hasten to add, by the way, that his teammates report that Sam Packard of Crystal Springs received prompt and efficient medical attention and is safely resting.)

Congratulations to Crystal Springs, which defeated Bellarmine A 225-210 in the second game of an advantaged final to win Cal Classic 2011! Crystal Springs also won the first game, 225-130, to force a winner-take-all game in round 12. The leading scorers were Hiep Nguyen of Bellarmine A, James Evans of Crystal Springs, and Jacqueline Kong of South San Francisco.

Final standings:

1. Crystal Springs (10-2)
2. Bellarmine A (9-3)
3. San Leandro (5-5)
t4. Castro Valley (4-6)
t4. Bellarmine B (4-6)
6. South San Francisco (0-10)

Full stats are here. Thanks to everyone who helped out today (especially Tanay Kothari, Di Xiao, and Chris Fleitas of Bellarmine). We hope all of the teams that played today return for this spring's Berkeley tournaments (including the NAQT state championship in April)!

There are still mirrors of this tournament, but if anyone has feedback feel free to direct them to me (or other people from Minnesota like Gaurav or Eliza whose contact info can be found in the main thread for this tournament, link available above).
