Sue Pasco Opening Tournament (9/22/12 at Essex, VT HS)

Post by kcommo »

The Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl will be running the 14th annual Sue Pasco Opening Tournament at Essex High School in Essex Junction, Vt., on Saturday, Sept. 22.

This is our annual kickoff tournament -- a semi-formal event, featuring candy prizes and primarily intending to serve as an introduction to the season for Vermont teams. However, will be gladly welcome any schools from outside the state interested in joining us.

We hold this tournament in conjunction with our league coaches meeting, and the format is dependent on the number of readers available. If we get enough volunteers, we will start during the meeting and play 8-10 matches about 20 minutes in length. If not, we hold some kind of collective competition during the meeting and likely run eight shorter matches once the meeting ends and the coaches can help moderate games.

This tournament will serve as an NAQT HSNCT qualifier, but to keep costs to a minimum, we're using IS-114A, a set from last season. Any school that has purchased or played on that set is ineligible to participate.

The tournament is free for all members of the Vermont Scholars' Bowl. We ask any out-of-state schools to pay $5 per team to help defray our question costs. The registration deadline is Sept. 18.

If your interested in registering or have any other questions, contact me, Kevin Commo, at kcommo (at) scholarsbowl (dot) org.

Here's a field update (as of 9/17):

Essex 2 teams
Lamoille 2 teams +/-
North Country 1+
Fair Haven 1-2
South Burlington 4
BFA-Fairfax 1
Burlington 1-2
Mount Mansfield 1
Montpelier 1-2
Hanover 1-2
Total: 15-19 teams

Also, it's looking like we will definitely have enough volunteers to play through the coaches' meeting, so unless things change dramatically next week, I expect the format will be 10 matches of 20 minutes.

We ended up with a field of 16 teams from nine schools for today's Sue Pasco Opening Tournament, and the Hanover A duo of Graham Reid and Matt Jin turned in a dominating performance to win the title by three full games.

It was a closely contested battle for second place between four teams and Essex ended up taking it on the head-to-head tiebreaker over Hanover B. Hanover A, Essex, Hanover B and Fair Haven (the top small school in eighth) should qualify for HSNCT.

Full stats can be found here: http://www.scholarsbowl.org/suepasco12_standings.html

Thanks to great help from David Madden of the History Bowl, Scholars' Bowl alumni Kiran MacCormick, Dan Suder, Rubin Goldberg, Nick Chlumecky and Will Bugbee, and several other volunteers this tournament ran as smoothly as I could have possibly hoped. My thanks to them and to all the teams for helping get the season off to a fun start.

Yes, assuming you count Hanover, which is in New Hampshire but competes in the Vermont Scholars' Bowl. This is a fairly informal event so we don't make any effort to recruit out of state, though other schools are welcome if they come to us.
