BHAI II - Blacksburg HS (Blacksburg, VA) 10/19/13 (IS-127A)

Post by mithokie »

Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg, VA will host the second annual Blacksburg High Academic Invitational on Saturday October 19, 2013.

The tournament will be hosted on NAQT's IS-127A and will represent an early opportunity for teams to qualify for HSNCT. We will also seek affiliation with PACE's NSC. All matches will be played in 20/20 format with powers and negs. There will not be any math computation toss-up questions. The tournament format will consist of some form of round-robin bracketed preliminaries followed by a re-bracketed playoffs to give all teams as many meaningful and competitive matches as possible. The exact format will be highly dependent upon the final number of teams in the field.

To register please fill out the registration form and send it to me at [email protected]. In lieu of the registration form, an e-mail with all of the pertinent information can be sent to me.

Registration Fee $70 for the first team
Subsequent teams $60 each

Possible Fee Reductions:
New to Quizbowl (No Circuit tournaments since 8/2011): -$20
Early Registration (By 9/20/2013): -$10

Working Buzzer Set: -$5 (No Limit)

Minimum Fee is $40 per team attending.

Will this tournament not be a novice-only affair? If this is truly open to all students, wouldn't a non-A-set tournament be better for having more fair competition instead of speed-checks and buzzer races on first lines by top teams attending this sort of event?

If top players from certain Top Teams feel they would not be properly rewarded playing a low-dfficulty set, perhaps they should choose not to play that particular tournament?

Note that all three of the regular IS sets available this fall have already been claimed in Virginia (the two VCU tournaments and Cavalier Classic).

This tournament is not being marketed as a novice tournament. Any and all players are welcome to attend and compete.

as has the only HSAPQ set for the year (the VCU/UVA collaboration). I really wanted to offer a vendor set and A sets are all that are available for us at this time.

Having run both of NAQT's offerings in the Blacksburg area, I would note that there is certainly a market for tournaments of somewhat easier difficulty. I think one should note that the last time we ran an A-set, only 3 teams broke 20PPB, and the bottom half of the field averaged 15ppb. Also, one should note that 2 teams playing SCOP novice last year didn't break 10ppb.

We sent out e-mail invitations today. Additionally, we are seeking affiliation with PACE and will let everyone know what level of certification we are awarded as soon as we have been told. Our tournament will represent an early opportunity to qualify for both the 2014 HSNCT and 2014 NSC.

We have officially been certified gold by PACE and will therefore qualify the top 20% of the field into next spring's PACE NSC as well as the top 15% into the HSNCT. Interest is beginning to increase with schools from 3 states expressing interest. Don't miss out on this early opportunity to qualify for both high school national championships.

We're a week and a half from the big day. Teams can still register through next Wednesday. We currently have the staff to support a field larger than 12, so we would love to have some more teams register. We look forward to seeing you on October 19 in Blacksburg.

Our field is closed. With the staff we have available, we will enter 3 house teams to bring the field to a nice even number of 12. We will run 2 prelim groups of 6, sending the top 3 from each group into a championship pool with the bottom 3 into a consolation pool. We will play a full round robin in the afternoon pools giving each team 10 rounds.

Considering this more carefully, since there are only 12 packets in an A-set, we will carry records over from morning play into afternoon play. Teams will only play the 3 teams in their afternoon bracket that they have not yet played. This will allow us to reserve a packet for morning tie-breaks, 2 packets for a possible advantaged final, and 1 packet for an emergency back-up. This will reduce the guaranteed number of matches to 8 for every team, but will give us some more margin for error, which I think is a good idea.

At the conclusion of prelims it appears that James Cole from Cave Spring has set the all-time NAQT record for PPG on an IS-A set or higher with 181.0 ppg. Cave Spring A and Honaker A are the last two undefeated teams.

Prelim stats can be found at :

Carryover games for playoffs are included at (This will be updated as the afternoon goes on):

The tournament concluded playoffs with a circle of death for 1st place, with 3 teams, George Washington, Honaker A, and Cave Spring A finishing the playoff group with a 4-1 record. Teams were seeded by playoff ppg (including the carryover games against teams from prelims in the same playoff bracket). Honaker A was seeded 3rd, George Washington was seeded 2nd, and Cave Spring A was seeded 1st. George Washington avenged their first round 10 point loss with a 345-320 point victory that saw a 115 point lead collapse to a 25 point victory as Honaker made a furious run to try to take the match, falling 3 bonus parts short while getting 5 out of 9 on the last 3 bonuses.

George Washington then won the finale by taking 11 of the 20 toss-ups including 9 powers. They had an incredible run of 4 straight powers and 5 of 6 powers to take a commanding lead at the start of the second half, followed by a furious come back by Cave Spring who took the next 3 toss-ups to bring the deficit down to 35 points. But, George Washington secured the championship with a power on the final toss-up.

As a Gold-Certified tournament BHAI II netted Honaker A, Cave Spring A, and George Washington (WV) PACE-NSC bids

Cave Spring A and George Washington also earned HSNCT bids by finishing in the top 15% of the field.

Complete stats may be found at

Thanks to our volunteers and to all the teams that competed. We look forward to seeing many teams at next year's BHAI III.
