RESCHEDULED - Demon Deacon Challenge 11/22/2014 (IS-140)

Post by zthomas.nc »

*** PLEASE NOTE: *** Due to low initial registration, this tournament has been rescheduled from November 8th to November 22nd. We are now offering a discount for early registration. Otherwise, details about the tournament will remain the same. Thanks!

Wake Forest University Quiz Bowl Team is pleased to announce the second annual Demon Deacon Challenge on Saturday, November 22, 2014. This is a high school Quiz Bowl tournament that will take place from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend. This tournament will take place in Kirby Hall on the Wake Forest University campus in Winston-Salem, NC, which is a different location from last year's tournament.

AFFLIATION AND QUESTIONS: We will use NAQT Invitational Questions, particularly NAQT set #IS-140. The tournament will serve as an NAQT event, and as such, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship. This tournament has also attained gold certification from PACE, meaning the top 20% of the field will qualify for the PACE NSC in 2015.

FORMAT: The teams will be divided into preliminary brackets, and then will be rebracketed into playoff brackets. More information about the exact format will be released as we get closer to the date, and may change due to the number of teams, etc. Each team will likely play 7-9 guaranteed games. Each match will consist of 2 un-timed halves, with each half consisting of 10 buzzer tossup questions. We will have powers and negs, but no bouncebacks on bonuses.

The tournament director may impose a limit on the number of teams for the tournament depending on staffing limitations prior to the tournament.

REGISTRATION: To register, it is preferred that you please fill out the following form http://tinyurl.com/WFUquizbowl.
You may also e-mail me, Zachary Thomas, at thomzi12 AT wfu.edu with the number of teams, staffers, and buzzers you want to bring, and an e-mail address and cell phone number where we may contact you. Closer to the date of the tournament, you will receive an e-mail containing the official rules, directions, parking and dining information (all materials which will also be provided/available on the day of the competition). Registration fees may be mailed in advance or paid at the tournament. Checks should be made out to “Wake Forest University."

FEE STRUCTURE:
Base fee: $70 for first team, and $30 for each additional team
Early Registration: $10 off school's total fee if you register on or before November 8th.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work).
Staff discount: $10 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score or read for tournament matches. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except tie-breakers) in order to receive credit for their school.
Travel discount: $15 off school’s total fee for traveling over 150 miles (as determined by Google Maps).
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you cannot have a negative fee)

METHOD OF PAYMENT: All teams must pay on or before the day of the tournament. Teams who do not pay on or before the day of the tournament will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start contacting your school administration about it. We can accept cash, personal checks. Checks should be made out to “Wake Forest University."

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with fewer than four players.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament; however, Wake Forest has a number of dining options available nearby the tournament site both on and off campus. Maps and suggestions will be provided at the tournament and in e-mails sent to the teams before the tournament.

We hope to see your team at The Demon Deacon Challenge on November 22nd at Wake Forest. Go Deacs!

Thanks for everyone who came out to the Demon Deacon Challenge! We had a good time running a 10-team round robin.

Congratulations to SCGSSM A, which placed first, as well as Carrboro A, which came in second. Both teams qualified for NAQT nationals.

Full stats can be found here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... all_games/

Thanks again!
