MSU Fall Kickoff Tournament (October 1, 2016)

Post by Ciorwrong »

The MSU Academic Competitions Club is pleased to announce its first annual High School Fall Kickoff Tournament. The tournament will be held October 1st, 2016.Please note that this date has been changed from September 24.

We are running NAQT IS-154. This is a regular difficulty question set that was NOT run in the state of Michigan last year but may have been played by Michigan teams. Please check to see if your team has played this set. This set was played last year at the 2/13/16 The Glen Gonsalves Memorial Tournament in Ohio for example.

The tournament will run under NAQT rules without timed rounds. Rule are available at https://www.naqt.com/rules.html

We currently have a 24 team field cap due to staffer constraints. Schools are limited to two teams per school (ie. an A team and a B team). If interest is high and we can find staffers, we will book additional rooms and expand the field. Please tell us if you want to bring more than two teams if the field expands. Staffers are extremely appreciated and will get free lunch if they volunteer. Edit: The field is now full.

This tournament is scheduled to be held in Berkey Hall near Grand River. Teams should start to show up at 8 am and games will start by 8:30. Teams should expect to hear more than 10 rounds of games and logistical information will be sent later in September.

Payment Structure:
$75 - first team
$65 - second team from a school and on
-$20 - new to quizbowl (no teams from your school have attended a pyramidal quizbowl tournament in the last two years-- let us know if you qualify for this)
-$10 - WORKING buzzer system (If the system is broken, we will revoke this discount. Additionally, if your school said they were bringing a buzzer and didn't, we will ask for the discount back.)
-$10 - Travel over 100 miles one way, as determined by Google maps
-$20 - Experienced moderator (We would appreciate it if we could have more moderators so we could expand the field)
Minimum fee per team: $30

Please pay us by cash or check made out to “MSU Academic Competition Club” on October 1st. Tell us if your team needs an invoice or you need to mail a check before the tournament. We will try to give all the teams invoices the day of the tournament. Please notify us if your team plan to pay after the tournament.

Please register by emailing either [email protected] or [email protected] and please indicate how many teams your school is planning to bring and if you want to claim any discounts. We want to see teams from all over the Midwest on October 1st in East Lansing.

Edit: We will also be hosting Devin Humphreys' High School Lit Side Event during the tournament's lunch break. Devin says that this event is free to play but donations are appreciated. The field cap is currently 16 individuals or 4 teams. The tournament is basically "open" to all high school students who have not seen the set so participating players do not need to be from the same school. Teams and players can express interest by email but sign-up will be handled by Devin at the tournament. There are 3 10/10 packets in the Side Event. I would highly recommend that high school "lit specialists" hear this set if they have not already. I have seen a lot of these questions and I gave feedback. The set is full of quality high school lit questions and people seemed to enjoy them at PACE in June.

Teams and players who are interested in playing the Lit Side Event are encouraged to eat during/at the side event. Participating individuals could also buy pizza from the MSU team and we will place the order for you.

The field is now full and we do not plan to expand the field due to how time constraints. I have also sent out a confirmation email to registered teams. Teams are encouraged to drop ASAP if they need to so teams on the waiting list can register.

Also of note: this tournament will serve as a HSNCT qualifier (it's on NAQT questions) and is also a Platinum level PACE qualifier. We hope to see all the teams that qualify from our tournament attend either of those national tournaments.

EDIT: Several teams have dropped so there is still space in the field. If a team needs to sign up last minute, I'd encourage they do so before this Saturday so I can start making schedules.

Stats for the prelims are up. We had 9 teams drop, so we ran 3 RR pools of 6 teams into 3 playoff RR pools of 6 teams. I apologize that the stats do not show the pools.

Edit: Please let me know if there are any spelling or scoring mistakes. I will try to correct them where I find them.

Thank you for catching this error. I have corrected it.

Country Day A won an advanced final against Okemos A to take first place. Notre Dame Prep A beat Ottawa Hills in a 3rd place game.

We hope to see all the teams who came out to East Lansing at future tournaments.
