Hoover Invitational Tournament (12/2/2017)

Post by Joshua Rutsky »

<EDITED TO REFLECT FIELD CAPS>

The 2017 Hoover Invitational Tournament (HIT) will be held on December 2nd of this year at Hoover High School outside of Birmingham, AL. This tournament is open to all levels of team, from novices to elite HS, and will have two divisions of play-three if there is sufficient interest in a Novice field again this year. This year's tournament will mirror the SCOP set for JV/Novice level, and will use the Harvard Fall Tournament set at the varsity level. This will be the only site in the Alabama/Georgia area where HFT will be mirrored, so make sure you mark your calendars to attend!

Format will be round-robin in nature, with a rebracket for playoffs in the afternoon. All teams will play, at minimum, 8 matches. We will play 20/20 matches all the way through, with no bouncebacks or worksheets. Teams will be four players, with two subs allowed per team. Teams larger than six players are encouraged to field a B squad.

Field caps, which may rise provided staff becomes available are as follows:

Varsity - 36 teams
JV - 16 teams
Novice - TBD

Fee structure for this year will be as follows:

$70 for first team
$60 for each additional team
-$5 per working buzzer (limit 2)
-$5 for experienced reader

Discounts may be requested for teams that are out of state or new to quizbowl and on a limited budget. Teams travelling from more than one state away will be offered significantly higher discounts.

Lunch will be offered on site, with snacks available throughout the day. There are multiple hotels within a five minute drive of our school; look for listings on Highway 150 or John Hawkins Parkway for best options.

Contact me at jrutskyAThooverDOTk12DOTalDOTus for further details.

Hope to see you in the Ham!

The tourney is filling quickly! There is a possibility we can open up more varsity space if demand is there, but I would suggest registering early rather than later if you want to attend. We will open a waitlist when we hit our cap.

At this time, we have reached our varsity field cap of 36 teams. We will begin a waitlist, and look into the possibility of expanding the field if demand requires.

We still have 6 slots left for JV and several for Novice teams.

Quick Results:

Varsity 1st - Battle Ground Academy
2nd - Chattahoochee
3rd - Dorman
4th - Woodford County

Stats to follow soon!

FTR, we ran this tourney on Neg 5 with roughly 70 teams playing simultaneously, and we did not have any issues with the server load or response, so whatever Mustafa did, it seems to have helped significantly.

Hope everyone enjoyed the set! FYI, we have set up a private forum for people to discuss general and specific parts about the set. To join the private forum, go to User Control Panel -> Usergroups -> Select "2017 Harvard Fall Discussion" -> Click "Submit".
