CSI XII (11/18/17) @ Cave Spring HS (Roanoke, VA)

Post by kamikaze »

I am happy to announce our 12th annual Cave Spring Invitational (CSI) will take place at Cave Spring High School in scenic southwest Virginia. We've scheduled our tournament for November 18, 2017.

AFFILIATION: We are a PLATINUM certified tournament by PACE this year. The top 25% of the field will qualify for the national high school tournament to be held in Washington DC on June 2nd and 3rd of next year.

QUESTIONS: We have secured the WHAQ housewrite for our tournament. If you want to see what their distribution is like, click on the following link: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=20041

FORMAT: Our field cap is 36 teams but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. We are going to guarantee ten rounds of competition for everyone, at least. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available. We also have other contests going on throughout the day that kids can participate in and win prizes.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work; max of 2 buzzer systems)
Travel discount: $15 off school's total fee if you have to travel more than 150 miles as determined by Google Maps.
New team discount: Teams that have never been to the CSI or NCIS may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).
Minimum fee: $35

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.

FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price.

HOTEL: We are trying to get discounts to nearby accommodations for schools who may want to spend the night. If you need more information, please feel free to contact me about suitable lodging.

COACHES CHALLENGE: Any coach/adult/reader not affiliated with Cave Spring HS is eligible to play. Top winners will some sort of prize to recognize their achievement. The format will be similar to last year, where all contestants do a 20-25 question worksheet at the time of registration. The highest qualifying scores will compete in a short buzzer match after lunch and before playoff announcements.

STUDENT CHALLENGE: We offer a side event in the morning for any high school player to participate in. Students will be show a slideshow of various scenes, all revolving around a theme, and are asked to identify as many as they can. The highest score will be rewarded with a prize during the individual awards.

Hello all. I wanted to thank you all for coming out to the Cave Spring Invitational XII. I know it was a long day for many of you all and we apologize for keeping many of you as late as we did. We tried a new system to ensure that the top teams had a shot at the awards this year and as a result, went a little too long due to a circle of death that had occurred in one of the playoff brackets. I hope this did not inconvenience anybody and you all made it home safely.

I also wanted to take a few minutes out to thank the Roanoke College Academic Team, along with Virginia Tech Academic Competition Organization, Alex Tabor, Ken and McKennon Flint who came out to moderate for us on Saturday. Without their help, it would not have been possible to host all those teams at our school.

Now, all prelim, playoff and combined stats can be found online here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/4531/. Sorry that it took so long but with the additional number of teams, it was a little overwhelming for our statistician to compile. We also had a couple of issues that were brought to our attention after the fact and we had to go back through the score sheets to check and verify.

To explain the various records in playoffs, after playoffs were done, there were three teams in a circle of death with each other in the Spangler division: Hidden Valley A, Langley A, and Langley B. We had to break the tie using half-packets with Hidden Valley A playing Langley B first. Langley B won and had to play an additional half-packet against Langley A to determine who would go onto the championship round with Rockbridge County A. Langley A beat Langley B to secure that right while Langley B had to face off with Tazewell for 3rd place. Rockbridge County A came out on top in the winner-take-all championships over Langley A while Langley B managed to best Tazewell on the last question of the round to take 3rd place.

We can tell you that the following eight teams have qualified for PACE Nationals to be held later in the season in Washington DC:

1. Rockbridge County A
2. Langley A
3. Langley B
4. Tazewell A
5. Hidden Valley A
6. Eastern View
7. Blacksburg A
8. Rappahannock County A*

* We made a mistake in seeding for playoffs. George Wythe and Rappahanoock County A were both tied in records from the same bracket at 5-2. Our stat program ranked George Wythe higher despite Rappahannock County A defeating them head-to-head in preliminary play. As a result, we swapped their final standings with each other.

As always, we enjoyed playing host to all the students and coaches who came to our school. We are always looking for ways to improve our tournament for better experiences for everyone. Feel free to drop a note as to what we could do to be better. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you again during the season at various tournaments.
