The Miami Valley School quiz bowl team cordially invites you to Give Thanks for Matt's Buzzers IV on November 18, 2017. This tournament will take place at The Miami Valley School in Dayton after being held at Olentangy Liberty in Powell for the past three years.

This tournament is a benefit event for Matt's Buzzers, an organization providing financial aid to quiz bowl teams around the country in memory of Matt Cvijanovich. The University of Maryland writing team will be donating a portion of the mirror fees from this tournament. Miami Valley will also donate a portion of the tournament's proceeds. For more information on Matt's Buzzers or to make a donation, please visit their website at http://www.mattsbuzzers.com/ or their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Matts-Buzzers-125131611243/.

We will run a high school division and a middle school division. The high school division will be split into two competition flights: Uber (for stronger teams) and Standard. When you register, please specify which flight you prefer. As a rule of thumb, teams in the Uber division should expect to score around 18 PPB or better on a standard IS set. As tournament director, I do reserve the right to ask teams to change their flight assignment if it seems necessary and appropriate for the fairness of the competition.

The initial field cap for the high school division will be 22 teams: 12 Uber and 10 Standard. The initial field cap for the middle school division will be 12 teams. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to raise those caps (particularly for HS), provided that we have enough moderators and we can secure enough space on our small campus.

Teams in the Uber division will be split into two morning brackets of six and play round robin. They will then be re-bracketed at lunch into a championship and consolation bracket, with all teams guaranteed ten games. Teams in the Standard division will play a ten-team round robin, with all teams guaranteed nine games. If necessary, there will be a final played in both the Uber and Standard divisions (either advantaged or unadvantaged depending on records of teams involved). If one team "clears the field" in either HS division, that team will win the division championship outright. The middle school division will be split into two morning brackets of six and play round robin. In the afternoon, teams will be re-bracketed into three brackets of four (championship, first consolation, and second consolation) and play round robin again. If necessary, there will be a final played (either advantaged or unadvantaged depending on records of teams involved). If one team "clears the field" in the MS division, that team will win the championship outright. This format is subject to change depending on field size, but all high school teams will be guaranteed at least nine games and all middle school teams will be guaranteed eight games.

The high school division will play the Maryland Fall set, a regular-difficulty set housewritten by the University of Maryland quiz bowl team. The middle school division will play NAQT MS-24.

Payment can be made to The Miami Valley School (put "Quiz Bowl" in the memo). Our address is 5151 Denise Dr, Dayton, OH 45429. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Registration will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 A.M., followed by a brief meeting for coaches and players. We expect to begin play promptly at 9:00 A.M.

Detroit Catholic Central A went 9-1 and cleared the field to win the Uber Division of Give Thanks for Matt's Buzzers IV. They defeated second place Beavercreek (7-3) by a score of 385-370 in Round 10 to obviate the need for a final.

In the Standard Division, Detroit Catholic Central D went 10-0 to claim the championship. Miami Valley A and Carroll A tied for second with records of 7-3.

Stats for the Standard Division are in progress. Pre-lunch statistics for both divisions and the complete Uber Division double round robin can be viewed here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/4632/

Standard stats are now up on the hsquizbowl tournament page, meaning all statistics for Give Thanks IV are posted! Click here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/4632/

Detroit Catholic Central A, Beavercreek, and Dublin Scioto should qualify for PACE NSC from this Platinum event.

I would be remiss if I didn't once again thank all the schools who supported our benefit tournament, as well as the University of Maryland quiz team for agreeing to donate a portion of their mirror fees from this event to Matt's Buzzers. Thanks to their contributions, we are able to make a sizable contribution to a great organization and help grow quiz bowl around the country!
