RIFT at Rice (WHAQ II, 11/18/17)

Post by 15garzab »

The Rice University Quiz Bowl Club is pleased to announce the Rice Invitational Fall Tournament (RIFT), which will be held on November 18th, 2017. This tournament is open to all high school and middle school teams.

Logistics

Check-in will begin at 8:00 A.M., and the opening meeting will start at 8:40, with matches beginning at 9:00. Upon your arrival, your team will need to submit any buzzers for discounts, and then we will collect money for entry fees and lunch ($8 per sandwich from Jimmy John’s, drinks included). Lunch will take place between noon and 12:45, immediately following round 6 or 7, depending on when the food arrives. An email containing all information regarding logistics (location on campus, parking, payment, etc.) will be sent to participating teams a few days prior to the tournament.

Format

This tournament will be run using the Washington High Academic Questionfest II (WHAQ II) set, a high school set; more details here: viewtopic.php?f=109&t=20041. The day will begin with a round robin, followed by a 24-team single-elimination bracket. We should be able to guarantee at least 8 games for each team. We will use NAQT rules, without a timer. The tournament will be capped at 30 teams, and schools are welcome to bring multiple teams.

Entry Fees

$95 base fee for first team, $80 base fee for all additional teams. Minimum fee is $65 per team.
-$5 per functional buzzer system (applied to first team, must be functional buzzers)
-$10 per approved moderator (applied to first team)
-$40 for schools who have not played pyramidal quizbowl in the past three years (overrides minimum fee, applied to each team)

To register for this tournament, please email [email protected] with the number of teams you will be bringing as well as any moderators or buzzers you'll have. Please send all questions to [email protected] as well.

Note: This tournament will be capped at 30 teams.
