Quiz Bowl and Academic Team Coaches/Sponsors,

You are invited to attend our sixth Mustang Invitational Quiz Bowl tournament on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017, at Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi. This is an NAQT-style tournament, using official NAQT questions, and qualifying for the NAQT National Tournament. Read more details in the post below and check out the NAQT website.

Registration
The tournament will consist of one open division for students in grades 9-12. Teams should consist of four members with up to two alternates. Entries will be capped at 36 total teams. Team slots will be reserved for teams in the order that registration is received. Initially we will guarantee up to two team slots per school. Please register via this online form. You may bring payment with you the day of the tournament.

The cost per team is $45.00, with a $10.00 discount for bringing a working buzzer set. If you can bring a 2nd or 3rd buzzer set, there will be an additional $10.00 discount for each set.
Our preference is that you write a check to "Murrah Debate Quiz Bowl Boosters," but if your school or booster club treasurer is picky, you may also write the check directly to Murrah High School. If you would like an official-looking invoice, please request one via e-mail ([email protected]) once you have registered online.

Rules and Stuff
We'll be following standard NAQT rules, more or less. Any departures from those rules (besides timing, addressed below) will be clarified closer to the tournament date. For those of you who have attended in the past, there won't be any significant changes from the last few years. Feel free to e-mail Micah Everson with questions or concerns ([email protected])

Tournament Day
Five round-robin style matches will be held before lunch. Teams will be divided into pools for round-robin play, and the best-performing teams from each pool (based first on Win-Loss record, second on Points Per Game) will advance to elimination rounds after lunch. Each round will consist of two halves with 10 toss-ups in each half. We will not have an official time limit for rounds, but we reserve the right to cut a match short if it goes over 45 minutes and holds up the tournament. That's not a hard and fast rule, but will be determined at the discretion of Mr. Everson, if necessary.

There will be pizza, snacks, and hot dogs available for purchase at lunch, along with a coaches vs captains match. We’ll then announce the advancing teams and the top-scoring individual Junior/Senior and Freshman/Sophomore, who will each receive awards.

(Teams are welcome to leave during lunch, but please do not bring outside food back onto campus with you.)

Depending on numbers, up to sixteen teams will advance to an octa-final round after lunch, and we'll follow single-elimination from there on out.

Tentative Schedule
8:00am – Registration
8:30am (or earlier, if possible) – Round I
9:15am - Round II
10:00am – Round III
10:45am – Round IV
11:30am - Round V

12:15pm – Lunch, Coaches vs. Captains
1:45pm - Octa-Final Round
2:30pm [or ASAP] - Quarter-Finals
3:15pm [or ASAP] - Semi-Finals
4:00pm [or ASAP] - Finals / Third-place match

Awards
Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams.
We'll also have awards for the top Junior/Senior individual scorer and the top Freshmen/Sophomore individual scorer – those scores will be based just on the preliminary rounds.

NAQT
The top 15% of teams will qualify for a spot to the NAQT National tournament to be held in Atlanta, May25-27, 2018 (Memorial Day Weekend). (So if we have 20 teams – the top 3 qualify, 30 teams – top 4, 36 teams – top 5.)

We will be using an official question set from NAQT - #IS-172. Coaches, it is your responsibility to ensure that your teams have not seen or heard this question set. No tournament in Mississippi should be using it, but tournaments in other states may have the same set. (There are currently tournaments in both Alabama & Louisiana scheduled to use this set in December, January, and February. It is also your ethical responsibility to not compete at one of those tournaments after attending ours. Double-check the national schedule to ensure that you are not attending multiple tournaments using the same set.)

PACE NSC
The top 15% of teams will also qualify for a spot to the PACE National Scholastic Championship to be held in Washington, D.C., June 2-3, 2018.. You can read more about the tournament and qualification here: http://www.pace-nsc.org/pace-nsc-2018-j ... ington-dc/

Directions
Murrah High School is located near the Woodrow Wilson exit from I-55 (exit 98A). If you are coming to Jackson from the east or west on I-20, take I-55 north. Once you are on Woodrow Wilson, take the first available left. Update from previous years: After turning left from Woodrow Wilson, turn right onto Peachtree, then left up the hill into our west (faculty) parking lot. You may enter the school on this west side of the building, and we’ll be utilizing the West Wing classrooms for our tournament space this year. Here’s a map, if you’re more of a visual person.

Here's a quick look at the first five years of our tournament, if you're curious.
