There will be an Ontario Provincial Championship on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Meghan Torchia will direct the tournament, with help from the Ontario Quizbowl Association and the University of Toronto quizbowl club.
The tournament will begin at 9:00 AM, in Sidney Smith Hall on the downtown U of T campus. The control room is 2125. The tournament will last 9 rounds plus finals.
Any high-school team from Ontario is qualified for this championship. We haven't set an official cap on the field size, but in the unlikely event we're close to capacity, we will B and C teams on a waitlist to make sure we can allow a team from every school. If it looks like we'll have extra space, we will allow exhibition teams from outside of Ontario.
The tournament fees are as follows:
- $80 for the first team from a school
- $60 for additional teams from a school beyond the first
- $5 discount for fully working buzzer systems
- $10 discount for every 200 km travelled
- $10 discount for schools that register a team by February 24
- $30 discount for schools that are new to quizbowl and brave enough to debut at a Provincial championship
Minimum total fee: $40 per team
You must register teams by emailing Meghan, the director, at meghan {dot} torchia (at) mail [dot] utoronto {dot} ca. Registration through any other channels is unofficial and must be supplemented by emailing Meghan.
The tournament will use a "Canadian edition" of the NAQT IS-174 set, so it should be one level more difficult than the fall tournaments we have played in Canada. We expect to have this tournament recognized as equivalent to an NAQT state championship. It will qualify at least one team for NAQT and PACE's US national championships.
We may take pictures at this tournament, and players' full names may appear in stats and coverage. If any players or teams prefer not to be photographed or identified, they should contact Meghan to express that wish.
Running list of registered teams:
Chaminade (2 teams, early)
Lisgar (1 team, 2 buzzers)
"Richmond Hill Scholars" (3 teams)
UToronto Schools (2 teams, 2 buzzers, early)
Westmount (1 team, early)
White Oaks (1 team, 2 buzzers, early)
