Westview High School is pleased to announce ReKT (Real Knowledge Tournament), a high school tournament co-directed by Kevin Yu and Rohan Venkateswaran.
QUESTION SET: The varsity division will be using FACTS, a regular-plus high school-level set written mainly by the Charter School of Wilmington and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The junior varsity division will use SCOP Novice 8, a novice set catered towards less-experienced high school or high-achieving middle school teams.
DATE/TIME: The tournament will take place on Saturday, 17 March, 2018. Check-in will begin at 8:00 A.M., and matches will begin promptly at 9:00 A.M.
LOCATION: The tournament will take place on the campus of Westview High School, located at 13500 Camino del Sur, San Diego, CA 92129. Vehicles may park in either lot and persons may enter the campus through the front gates. Matches will take place in the classrooms in the D and G buildings. A map of the campus can be found here.
REGISTRATION: Teams must register by filling out this Google Form or by emailing [email protected] with the following information: (1) the school's name, (2) the number of teams, (3) the number of buzzers, (4) the number of moderators. Registrations will be confirmed with a reply email. Replying to this thread will not register a team. The registration fee may be paid on-site with either cash or check. Please make all checks payable to Westview Quizbowl.
The Varsity division has a soft cap of 12 teams and the Junior Varsity division of 18 teams.
ELIGIBILITY:
All teams are welcome to play in the varsity division.
To qualify for the junior varsity division, all members on a team must meet all of these criteria:
-has no more than two (2) years of experience playing high school quizbowl
-has not attended a high school nationals tournament
-has not won more than three (3) tournaments in a single school year at the JV or varsity level
-has not scored more than 70 points per game (PPG) at any high school tournament
PRICING:
Teams that did not play any tournaments in the 2016-2017 season will pay a flat $30 per team.
$80 for the first team
$70 for subsequent teams
All middle school teams will start at $70 before the discounts apply.
DISCOUNTS:
- $5 per working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)
- $10 per experienced moderator
- $5 per 50 miles traveled one-way per school
Minimum fee: $40 per team
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: We will be using official NAQT rules, with the exception that matches will be run as untimed halves of ten questions each. In addition, ACF rules will be followed regarding timing and tiebreakers. A preliminary round robin in the morning will be followed by round robin playoffs in the afternoon based on win-loss records. Ties will be resolved on the basis of points per game (PPG) within brackets, and ties crossing different brackets will be resolved on the basis of points per bonus (PPB).
FOOD: A light breakfast will be provided in the lobby, and eateries exist within a comfortable 5-10 minute walking distance of the campus. Food options include places such as Cotijas, Rubio’s, PizzaRev, Subway, Pick Up Stix, Luna Grill, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, etc.
