Swarthmore Novice II (SCOP) - November 10

Post by Thaumatibis gigantea »

Swarthmore College Quizbowl is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the second annual Swarthmore Novice, a beginner's high school-tournament on Saturday, November 10, 2018. This tournament will use the SCOP Novice 9 set. Details on the set can be found here.

Registration: Registration can be completed at this link. If you have any questions regarding registration, please e-mail me at rrosent2 [AT swarthmore DOT edu]. We will be instituting a hard field cap of 18 teams and will initially limit each school to 2 teams plus as many waitlist teams as desired.

We are not placing strict limits on player's age, but suggest that you limit your rosters to students who have 2 or fewer years of high school playing experience prior to the tournament date. We also ask that experienced teams please use discretion in choosing to attend this tournament and use this opportunity to give older players staffing experience if bringing a team of younger players.

Registration Fees:
$65 for first team / $55 for each additional team
-$10 for each working buzzer system
-$15 for each experienced staffer
Minimum fee per team: $30

Tournament Format and Logistics: Our tournament format will depend on the number of teams, but we anticipate using a two-stage group system, and guaranteeing all teams that stay to the tournament's conclusion at least 8 games.
Rounds will follow standard, untimed format: consisting of 20 tossups, for 15 point powers and -5 point negs.

Registration will begin at 8 am and matches will start at 9 am. The majority of this tournament will take place in Kohlberg Hall, in the center of campus. Free guest parking is available in either Whittier Lot or Benjamin West. The town of Swarthmore, a ten-minute walk from Kohlberg Hall, offers several options for lunch. Alternatively, there are numerous restaurants within a 10 minute drive of campus along Baltimore Pike and South Chester Road.

If you have any questions, feel free to post in this thread, or email me at [email protected].

With our field just over halfway filled, any schools considering registering should please do so. We will open the field to waitlist teams at the end of this month (October 27th).

Coaches have been contacted with preliminary logistics and we have tentatively filled the field. Pending sufficient interest, we may expand the field further up to 24 teams.
