Miami Valley School Fall Kickoff, 9/29/18 (IS-177 & MS-27)

Post by trbenedict »

The Miami Valley School quiz bowl team in Dayton, Ohio cordially invites you to the second annual MVS Fall Kickoff Tournament on September 29, 2018. We will run a high school division and a middle school division. The initial field cap for the high school division will be 18 teams and the initial field cap for the middle school division will be 18 teams. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to raise those caps, provided that we have enough moderators and we can secure enough space on our small campus.

QUESTION SETS & FORMAT:
The high school division will play NAQT’s IS-177 set and the middle school division will play NAQT's MS-27.

The top 15% of each division will qualify for NAQT’s all-school National Championship Tournaments (HSNCT and MSNCT). Additionally, the top 30% of small-school eligible teams will qualify for NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament (SSNCT). More info on those tournaments, including NAQT's definition of "small school," is available on NAQT’s website.

Teams will be grouped into initial brackets of six and play a round robin within their bracket. After lunch, we will re-bracket teams for afternoon rounds. During afternoon rounds, teams will be placed against other teams with similar records. Assuming a full field, all middle school teams will play at least eight games, while all high school teams will play at least ten games.

PAYMENT:
Payment can be made to The Miami Valley School (put "Quiz Bowl" in the memo). Our address is 5151 Denise Dr, Dayton, OH 45429. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Registration will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 A.M., followed by a brief meeting for coaches and players. We expect to begin play promptly at 9:00 A.M.

FEES:
First Team: $60
Each Additional Team: $50
BUZZER DISCOUNT: -$5 per buzzer system, limit two per team that you are bringing.
READER DISCOUNT: -$10 for a competent moderator, limit two per team that you are bringing.
TRAVEL DISCOUNT: There is a $10 discount for teams traveling over 100 miles one way (our zip code is 45429).
MINIMUM Fee: $35

If your program has not played a pyramidal tossup-bonus quiz bowl tournament in the last three years, your team(s) will automatically qualify for the minimum fee of $35. Please ask if you have questions regarding this discount.

For lunch, we will offer cheese and pepperoni pizza for $10/pie. There is a dearth of convenient dining options around MVS, so please plan on staying on-site.

To register or for more information contact Tyler Benedict: tyler DOT benedict AT mvschool DOT com. We hope to see you in Dayton in September!

With the addition of teams from Tippecanoe and Allderdice, the high school division has 15 of 18 spots filled. If the field fills in the next few weeks, we will maintain a waitlist. If it looks like we can get to a good number from the waitlist (namely, 24 teams), we will raise the field cap and let those waitlisted teams in the field. Email soon if you want to register for Fall Kickoff!

Glasgow High School would like to attend. We have not requested approval yet, but I do not anticipate problems. Thanks!

With Detroit Catholic Central A and B joining the field, we are now at 18 teams in the high school division. As detailed above, any subsequent high school teams will be added to the waitlist until we reach our new field cap of 24 teams.

Also, if any currently registered schools would like to bring more teams, please let me know and I will add your additional teams to the waitlist. Thanks!

Carroll (Dayton, OH) and George Washington (Charleston, WV) have each registered one team for the high school division, which means that St. Charles, Solon C, Oakwood, Carroll, and GW are in the field and we have hit our cap of 24 teams. The field for the high school division is now closed and all subsequent teams will be placed on a waitlist in case of drops.

Not sure if they are different teams, but there is a team named Solon listed here twice.

Bellefontaine has registered one team in the high school division, so the HS field is once again at 24 teams.

Good catch...Solon registered a third team, but when I copied and pasted from the waitlist I neglected to combine the registrations. This has been fixed.

One Tippecanoe HS team has had to drop. Their spot in the field will be filled by Beavercreek C.

A logistical email has been sent to all teams. Don't forget to get rosters and lunch orders to me by 3:00 PM tomorrow!

We hosted 24 HS teams and 12 MS teams from five states for the 2018 MVS Fall Tournament. The top of the HS division was a good old-fashioned slugfest, with no team emerging unscathed. Beavercreek A defeated Glasgow in a one-game final after both teams finished the day 9-1, with Miami Valley A, Solon A, and Henderson County clustered close behind at 8-2.

In the middle school division, Miami Valley A (8-0) defeated Copley A (7-1) in what turned out to be a de facto final in Round 8.

This tournament did not run nearly as smoothly as I had hoped, and I apologize to all the teams for the issues during the day. Coaches, please read my post-tournament email for some specific things we hope to do better next time. After hosting last year’s Fall Kickoff, Give Thanks for Matt’s Buzzers IV, and Groundhog Day Classic, all of which were pretty clean, I’m disappointed that we fell short of that quality product last weekend. As a gesture of good will, all schools who attended this year’s Fall Kickoff who choose to attend our next tournament (Give Thanks on 11/10) can register their teams for our minimum fee, $35 per squad.

HS stats are here: http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/51 ... _order%29/

MS stats are being edited and will go back up shortly.

This is the 2018-19 High School Set Feedback Form. This is used to return feedback on the question set you played to the team that put the set together. Meaningful, constructive feedback from those that were at this tournament, whether as a staffer, coach or player, is welcome via this form.
