Secret City Classic 2018, Oak Ridge High School, 10-20-18

Post by ShorterPearson »

This is a preliminary announcement, on behalf of Parker Jarnigan of Oak Ridge High School (who is sitting right next to me) and East Tennessee Quizbowl, that the second Secret City Classic will be played at Oak Ridge High School on October 20th.

Further details to come!

We're delighted to announce officially that we'll be a mirror site of SCOP Novice 9.

We'll be able to talk registration in relatively short order. Stay tuned.

Thank you Mr. Pearson for that "save the date" post...looks like it worked, as several teams have already contacted us expressing interest in the 2nd annual Secret City Classic

The fee structure is as follows:

Entry costs: $75 for first team, $65 for second team, $50 for third team

Discounts:
$ - 5 per (preferably functioning) buzzer system Max of 2
$ -10 for experienced reader (must provide name and contact info upon registration) Max of 1
$ -10 for teams who travel at least 150 miles one-way (per Google Maps)

Interested teams can register via google form, available at this link

As Chuck said above, this time around , we will be offering a mirror of the popular SCOP Novice question set. The group behind SCOP has been writing questions for tournaments since 2010, and it has become one of the more popular packets new teams. We think this will be a great set to kick off the fall competition calendar. If you're interested, you can read more about the SCOP Novice 9 at their website.

We'd love to see many of our teams from last year come back out, as this year's version promises to be just as successful and exciting as last time around. You can look forward to the same core of high caliber readers, as well as quick and up to date stats throughout the event. If you didn't make it out last year, we had a great group of 18 teams, including schools from the Knoxville, Upper East TN, and Southwest Virginia circuits. Farragut High School was the overall winner, but strong showings from Wise County and Gate City made them earn it. Playing for Gate City was Dylan Cox, whose 87 PPG at the Secret City Classic was good enough to earn him NAQT's player of the week honors

Questions concerning the event or registration can be fielded here or sent via e-mail to [email protected].

Seeing as York is hosting their first ever tournament the following weekend, that's a whale of a first-commit!

The Secret City Classic II is officially a qualifier for the National Scholastic Championship in DC. As IF you needed more reason to come ;)

Here's the word from the fine folks at PACE:

"Congratulations! PACE (the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence) has designated your tournament, Secret City Classic II, as a gold NSC qualifier. This means that the top 20% of teams in your tournament (rounded up to the nearest integer) will qualify for our national high school quizbowl championship, the PACE NSC on the weekend of June 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Reston outside of Washington, D.C"

for more about PACE or their national tournament, see their website at http://www.pace-nsc.org/2019-nsc-qualif ... uidelines/

We apologize for the abnormally long wait time on this. We had some difficulties with software and with personal schedule committments made for the unusual delay. Thanks to all teams and players. Special recognition is due to Andrew Kelley of Middlesboro, Sanjay Chakrabarty from Cookeville, and Aidan Cook out of Honaker, all who helped their teams to strong showings. I would expect those players to contribute to their teams making some strong showings throughout the year.
