Give Thanks For Matt's Buzzers @ Miami Valley: 11/10/18

Post by trbenedict »

The Miami Valley School quiz bowl team cordially invites you to Give Thanks for Matt's Buzzers V on November 10, 2018. This tournament will take place at The Miami Valley School's campus in Dayton, OH.

A portion of the proceeds from this tournament will be donated to Matt's Buzzers, an organization providing grants to quiz bowl teams in need around the country. For more information about Matt's Buzzers or to apply for a grant, click here: http://www.mattsbuzzers.com/index.html.

We will run a high school division and a middle school division. The high school division will be split into two competition flights: Uber (for stronger teams) and Standard. When you register, please specify which flight you prefer. As a rule of thumb, teams in the Uber division should expect to score around 19 PPB or better on a standard IS set. As tournament director, I do reserve the right to ask teams to change their flight assignment if it seems necessary and appropriate for the fairness of the competition.

The initial field cap for the high school division will be 24 teams: 12 Uber and 12 Standard. The initial field cap for the middle school division will be 12 teams. If there is sufficient interest, we will try to raise those caps (particularly for HS), provided that we have enough moderators and we can secure enough space on our small campus.

Teams in the Uber and Standard divisions will be split into two morning brackets of six and play round robin. They will then be re-bracketed at lunch into a championship and consolation bracket, with all teams guaranteed ten games. If necessary, there will be a final played in both the Uber and Standard divisions (either advantaged or unadvantaged depending on records of teams involved). If one team "clears the field" in either HS division, that team will win the division championship outright.

The middle school division will be split into two morning brackets of six and play round robin. In the afternoon, teams will be re-bracketed into three brackets of four (championship, first consolation, and second consolation) and play round robin again. If necessary, there will be a final played (either advantaged or unadvantaged depending on records of teams involved). If one team "clears the field" in the MS division, that team will win the championship outright.

This format is subject to change depending on field size, but all high school teams will be guaranteed ten games and all middle school teams will be guaranteed eight games.

The high school division will play the WHAQ III set, a regular-difficulty set housewritten by The Miami Valley School and Washington High School (MO) quiz bowl teams. The middle school division will use the RAMS set, housewritten by players at The Miami Valley School and edited by me, Tyler Benedict.

Payment can be made to The Miami Valley School (put "Quiz Bowl" in the memo). Our address is 5151 Denise Dr, Dayton, OH 45429. You may also bring cash or check to the tournament site.

Registration will be from 8:00 A.M. until 8:30 A.M., followed by a brief meeting for coaches and players. We expect to begin play promptly at 9:00 A.M.

Field update as of 10/26: things look good in the Standard HS and MS divisions, with a handful of spots left in each if you would like to register or increase the number of teams attending.

The Uber division has been slow to fill, so if we do not hit at least six Uber teams by November 2 (one week from today), I will cancel that division.

If you've been waiting to register, don't delay!

Congratulations to Beavercreek "A," who cleared the field with a 10-0 record to win the HS division of Give Thanks for Matt's Buzzers V! Beavercreek B finished slightly ahead of Tippecanoe in the PPG tiebreaker to claim the runner-up trophy (both teams finished 6-4).

In the middle school division, Miami Valley finished first with an 8-0 record, with Winburn A taking second at 7-1.

Stats for HS and MS are available here: http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5417/

For HS teams that played WHAQ III and want to provide feedback on the questions: since the set is not clear, please join the "2018 WHAQ Discussion" private group on this forum. Go to your user control panel, click on usergroups, then find "2018 WHAQ Discussion" and join it.

MS teams that played our RAMS set: there is no private discussion forum for RAMS, but if you have feedback on the questions you played, please email me or send me a direct message.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make Give Thanks V such a success!
