Governor’s School Invitational (GSin) - Richmond, VA (12/8/18)

Post by Jλamb »

In lieu of a new GSAC, the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is pleased to announce the 2018 Governor’s School Invitational (GSin). The tournament, which will use the 2018 Harvard Fall Tournament (HFT), will take place at Maggie Walker on Saturday, December 8, 2018. The field cap is tentatively set at 24 teams, but we would like to expand this, if possible. A post below will be periodically updated as the field grows. If you have any comments or questions, please email us at [email protected] or post below.

GSin is now a platinum qualifier for the 2019 PACE NSC, meaning that the top 25% of teams (rounded to the nearest whole number) will qualify for the 2019 National Scholastic Championship on the weekend of June 8-9, 2019 at the Hyatt Regancy Reston outside of Washington D.C.

Each team is guaranteed a minimum of 9 games. Teams can have a maximum of six players, four of which may play at a time. Substitutions are allowed at the half. If you plan on bringing more than six players, please register a second team.

Location
The tournament will take place at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, which is located at 1000 N. Lombardy Street, Richmond, VA 23220. Parking will be in the school lot, and the school should be accessed through the Elizabeth Street entrance.

Question Set
The 2018 Harvard Fall Tournament (HFT) XIII will be used at GSin. Please note that, unlike GSAC, HFT has a target difficulty of regular plus, placing it between a regular difficulty set like GSAC and sets used at high school national competitions in terms of its difficulty. For more information about HFT XIII, including the question distribution, see this forum post.

Registration
The registration deadline is December 5, 2018.
Please send an email to [email protected] that includes the following information:
1. Your school's name
2. The number of teams, buzzers, and moderators you will bring
3. A name, an e-mail address, and a phone number for a contact that can be reached on the day of the tournament
4. If you would like an invoice, please let us know.
On the day of the tournament, check-in will begin at 8 am. The tournament should conclude no later than 5 p.m.

Fee Structure
Base fee per team: $70*
Functional Buzzer Discount: $5
Travel Discount (150+ miles): $10
Staff Discount (please only volunteer a competent staffer): $10
Minimum fee: $45*
*These are changes that apply to schools that have registered and will register.
Fees can be payed by check or in cash. Preferably, payment will be made during registration on the day of the tournament, but you may email us to make other arrangements if necessary.

Food
EDIT: Due to an insufficient number of staffers, breakfast will not be provided at GSin. In addition, pizza and drinks will not be sold to teams at lunch. Please make other arrangements for breakfast and lunch. There are many excellent eateries in the vicinity of Maggie Walker, and we would be happy to provide you with a list of options for lunch upon request.

We hope to see you in December. Please share this with any teams you think may be interested and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or comments. Additionally, we are planning to revive GSAC for the 2019-2020 season with its twenty-sixth incarnation, Return of the Jedi.
