Livingston HS (NJ) March Madness - NAQT IS-183 - 3/16/19

Post by Guybo »

Hello everyone! Happy New Year!

I am pleased to announce that Livingston HS, in Livingston, NJ, will be hosting its annual tournament - this year on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5493/

SET: We are going to be using NAQT set IS-183.

TEAMS: We can physically host up to 48 teams. Last year we had 48 teams! However, we are going to have a soft cap at 36 teams for now and, if sufficient demand warrants and we are able to secure sufficient readers and buzzers, will up the number of teams to 42 with a hard cap of 48 teams. Initially, I will take a cap of 3 teams per school and, by February 11, approximately one month before the tournament, will put all additional teams per school into the field. For the moment, all teams beyond 3 from a single school will be put on the wait list.

ROUNDS: We are planning on a round robin of preliminary rounds in the morning (depending on number of teams) followed by lunch and then playoffs to follow for all. We aim to let each team have at least 10 rounds.

START TIME: Check in/registration between 8 - 8:30 with a moderator meeting at 8:30 and a welcome at 8:45 with round 1 to start at 9:00. We aim to be done with the tournament between 5:00 - 6:00.

FOOD: A great, high quality bagel (with butter and cream cheese) and orange juice breakfast will be provided free of charge. We will be selling pizzas in the morning (order them that morning upon arriving to check in) at approximately $12 per pie (please bring cash and as close to exact change as possible), as well as selling extra slices, waters, sodas, DELICIOUS homemade baked goods, and other food/snacks throughout the day, most all of which will cost $1 each. This is our team fundraiser so we would appreciate your support!

FEES:
$80 for the first team
$70 for each additional team from the same school
Discounts of $10 for each EXPERIENCED moderator (as needed) and $5 for each buzzer set (as needed)
Max discount of $20 per school

HOW TO REGISTER: Registration will constitute a TEAM COACH/ADVISOR filling out the following Google Form:

https://goo.gl/forms/AkuOJrH5dAYO2ER62

This confirms your attendance and registration as well as how many (if any) buzzer systems and/or moderators you will be able to bring. Our email is [email protected] which you can use for any further inquiries. Information/field updates will also be posted and updated on this hsquizbowl.org forum here so please check/monitor this. Please understand that posting on the forum does not constitute officially registering nor any official communication with the team. Email is the best way to communicate any possible concerns or questions.

PAYMENT: Please make all checks out to "Livingston High School" and either bring with you to the tournament or mail to the below address at my (Guy Rabner) attention. Please try to make sure that payment is in by tournament time. If you require a pre-tournament invoice in order to have a check cut, please let us know ASAP or by March 8, so that we can send you the invoice in sufficient time.

Livingston High School is located at 30 Robert H. Harp Drive, Livingston, NJ 07039-2634. We're close to major interstates and only a 1/2 hour drive to Manhattan.

Looking forward to seeing you in March! Wish for no snow and nice weather, and an easy winter!

This post will be edited periodically for Field Updates, so come by from time to time if you want to know the latest registered field. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Congratulations to Hunter for well earned victory this past weekend at QuBit! They, along with High Tech, whose 3 teams finished in the top 5 last weekend at FunFest, are clearly asserting their dominance in the greater NYC region. They will both be present at March Madness in March along with many other of the better teams in the region.

As of today, Monday, February 11, with approximately 5 weeks before our tournament, we have 31 teams registered. If you would like to be a part of the competition I suggest you register soon as we have only 5 spots remaining until our first cut off point, 36 teams. After we reach 36 teams, other teams will be put on the wait list and we will have that size field unless we get a sufficient number of teams on the list that warrant a field increase. Our hard field cap is 48 teams, which we had last year.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at Livingston HS in March!

As of today, February 25, we have reached our initial cap of 36 teams for our tournament, which will take place on March 16. All teams that register now will be put on the wait list until such time that other schools drop teams or if we have reached enough teams registering that warrant an increase of the field to the next cap, 42 teams, and, subsequently, 48 teams as a maximum cap if needed. This being said, there are ALWAYS teams that drop due to various circumstances so please don't be inhibited by the wait list. If your team is registered, please double check with your players who signed up that they still plan on attending and that you will still have the number of team registered. Last minute drops can wreak havoc on a tournament as well as being unfair to those on the waiting list so please double check and please email me no later than a week before the tournament if you should have any changes. Thank you!

March Madness is almost ready to go for Saturday. Thank you for following and potentially attending our tournament. A link to live stats will be posted Saturday morning for all of you out there to follow. Teams will receive a final email later today for final details.

A few last minute pleas:

1) We had a full 42 team field and, despite 2 emails asking teams to confirm participation over the last 2 weeks, a team (bringing 4 buzzer systems) unceremoniously (and unapologetically) dropped last night after we made the brackets. This means we have an open spot in the draw. If you would still like to participate, please let us know ASAP. Thanks.

2) We should be OK but our staffing is very tight and we could use a couple of good readers. If anyone thinks they could volunteer their time Saturday to read questions, please let me know ASAP. We’d be happy to provide you a pizza lunch, a great breakfast and soda and water all day and our thanks.Thank you!

Good luck to all teams and we look forward to seeing you either following our at our tournament on Saturday.
