LIFT IX (10/24/09) Results

Postby BroNi » Sat Jun 20, 2009 7:43 pm

The Long Island Fall Tournament (LIFT) IX will be held at Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, Long Island, NY on 10/24/09.

Information concerning LIFT IX:

- $60.00 First team, $50.00 each additional team
- Discounts: $10.00/buzzer system, $10.00/moderator, $10.00/100 mile travel (based on Google maps from town to Uniondale, NY): maximum total discount $60.00
- NAQT IS-88 (20/20 untimed)
- Guaranteed at least 6 games. We will probably rebracket for the Playoff games.
- Location: Kellenberg Memorial HS in Uniondale, Long Island, NY, 30 miles E of NYC, right off of Exit M4 West from the Meadowbrook Parkway. Recommendation: Those coming from the south of NYC should NOT go through the city. Use the Outerbridge or Goethals to Staten Island, then the Verazzano-Narrows to LI.

Registration will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., with the first round starting at 8:45 a.m. The Award ceremony will be at 6:00 p.m. I would encourage you to bring experienced people to help moderate...you'd get a discount and we could have a bigger field!

As in the past, we will have a constantly updated projection of the preliminary results as soon as they are entered for all to see and check during the day.

We can accommodate around 85 teams. So as an early Registration incentive, from now to Oct. 2nd, we will not place any limit on the amount of teams that a school would like to bring. However, I reserve the right to limit the number of teams from any school that registers after that date.

Register by posting here, or email to bronigel (at) kellenberg (dot) org.

Edit: Date changed. Information added...

We've never driven up this way before, and as a rule of thumb i really really hate driving in the NYC area, but hey, maybe we'll do it this year. At least, we have a non-zero chance of attending, or something. I'll see what Trey and Co. think.

Hey, this is great! We'll be able to attend with more than one team now that this no longer conflicts with ACF Fall.

Brother Nigel,

Care to shed any light on the field that is or might be assembling for LIFT this year, beyond the few that have already so indicated on this thread? Curious here in Jersey (but I do understand that it is still early).

Because of limited personnel, LIFT IX will have a maximum of 48 teams.

I also need some active contact from 3 schools from the field above to determine your status: Hunter, Seton Hall and White Plains.

Edit: ....or not.

Our field has now grown to 21 schools and around 60 schools. Although we are fine with buzzers (thanks to the schools attending!), we COULD be a little short on experienced moderators who would be willing to read and keep score in game rooms.

Any volunteers out there who might be in the NYC/Long Island area on 10/24th? We offer free breakfast, free pizza and soda, and a fun day of reading. Maybe we can work something out.... Contact me at bronigel (at) kellenberg (dot) org.

Congratulations to Charter A---the Championship Final was an exciting and dramatic match with Charter emerging with a pulsating and well earned victory on the last question. And, of course, thanks to Brother Nigel and all at Kellenberg for their wonderful hospitality. Au contraire, Paul from Hunter B, you did indeed win the valuable prize for the highest # of "neg's" with 23 in 7 games (and in spite of that, ranked 13 overall with a 47.86 ppg). But your prize, in keeping with our theme and in our tradition, is not a mere "old book," but a grusome holloween mask so that you may hide your face in shame! We actually had it ready, but in the excitement of the final rounds, forgot to award it. It will be delivered into the hands of Hunter A when we see each other at MIT next weekend. FYI, the next highest was Will S. from Kings Park B with 14.

At the other end of the spectrum, individual trophies were awarded to the top 2 PPGs from the Prelims. Here were the top 5....
1) Jimmy M. (Seton Hall A) 78.57 ppg
2) Michael P. (Bergen B) 67.14
3) Lily C. (Hunter A) 65.00
4) Zihan Z. (Hunter A) 62.86
5) Paul K. (H Greeley A) 61.43

I would like to apologize for 2 things: running 2 hours overtime and cancelling the final two consolation games for all teams ranked 17 through 56. We could have been better organized for the latter rounds in the day, and we suffered from a few readers who were slow and/or inexperienced.

On the other hand, every team had the opportunity to play 10 games if they wanted. I was very happy when 51 of the 56 teams decided to stay for the playoff and rebracketing rounds.

I would be very negligent if I did not echo Coach Powers' hearty gratitude for all the volunteers from the attending schools who helped during the day. In particular, I would like to publicly thank Jon Pinyan, formerly of Bergen, who gave us quite a bit of assistance in setting up the playoff brackets and final placement games.

In addition, I would like to thank John Beauregard, an alumnus of Kellenberg who was a member of our very first quiz bowl team, and Mrs. Janet Churik, a parent of a current K-berger quiz bowl member, who relentlessly plowed through the scoresheets during the day entering the data into SQBS.

I have the Stats ready (SQBS) in two files, one for prelims and one for playoffs. Now....

1) I would like to post them to the Scobo Tournament Central on the LIFT page (http://results.scobo.net/LIFT), but for the life of me, I have forgotten how to do that. Any help?

2) I spent the day cleaning up the files, correcting some minor input errors, etc... I was all set to finish it off with the last 12 games of the compeition, when I realized that I was missing ONE game's scoresheet. After searching through a enormous pile of paperwork, it remains lost. And, of course, it would be the one game that most people would want to review, Hunter A's loss to Charter A in the semi-finals. So since I know people are anxious for the Stats, I made up a score, adding made-up TU's, and keeping it close to the P/B earned during the playoff rounds. If anyone from Charter or Hunter has the correct data line of that game, please email it to me.

Lily sent me Hunter A's data and the score. Charter A 285 d. Hunter A 225

Re: LIFT IX (10/24/09) Results

Postby BroNi » Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:31 pm

Here's how the day went. We had 7 brackets of 8 teams. After the Prelim rounds, we took the top 2 from each bracket along with 2 wild-cards, ranked them 1-16 and put them into 4 brackets of 4. (We also did this with the 17-32 ranked teams and the 33-48). After playing 3 more rounds, we then took the top team in each of the 4 brackets, ranked them by Record and PPG, and played two remaining games to determine places 1 - 4, the the second place teams for 5 - 8, etc. We had planned to do the same across the field, but had to cancel those two games for teams ranked 17 and lower. (Actually teams ranked 11, 13, 15, and 16 didn't stay for the final two games either). So here's how it went...

After the Playoff brackets, these 4 teams came in last in each bracket...
Ranked 16th: Ranney A (0-3, 93.3 PPG) LEFT
15th: Trinity A (0-3, 138.3) LEFT)
14th: St. Joseph's B (0-3, 145.0) No one around to play
13th: E.O. Smith A (0-3, 180.0) LEFT

For 9th - 12th (3rd in each playoff bracket)
Seton Hall A (Ranked 9th, 2-1,200.0) d. North Babylon A (12th,1-2,106.7) 210-125
White Plains A (10th,1-2,190.0) d. Smithtown E A LEFT (11th,1-2,178.3) by forfeit.
North Babylon A d. Smithtown E A by forfeit.
12th: Smithtown E A
11th: North Babylon A
White Plains A d. Seton Hall A 315-225
10th: Seton Hall A
9th: White Plains A

For 5th - 8th (2nd in each playoff bracket)
Bergen B (8th,2-1,241.7) d. H. Greeley A (5th,2-1,283.3) 215-175
Livingston A (6th,2-1,280.0) d. Stuy A (7th,2-1,275.0) 265-180
H. Greeley A d. Stuy A 325-230
8th: Stuy A
7th: H. Greeley A
Livingston A d. Bergen B 380-150
6th: Bergen B
5th: Livingston A

For 1st - 4th (1st in each playoff bracket)
Charter A (4th,2-1,380.0) d. Hunter A (1st,3-0,410.0) 285 - 225
St. Joseph's A (3rd,3-0,280.0) d. Bergen A (2nd,3-0,365.0) 250-205
Hunter A d. Bergen A 365-225
4th: Bergen A
3rd: Hunter A
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Charter A d. St. Joseph's A 305-275
2nd: St. Joseph's A
1st: Charter A

edit: Hunter A v. Charter A score

Yes, that was something that amazed and impressed me. As to the Charter-Hunter semifinal, I want to say the score was 295-225. I'm pretty sure Charter led by 75 with 2 tossups, with Hunter getting 15+20 on #19. Charter then answered #20 to clinch the game, and added 20 on the bonus IIRC. Overall, out of five playoff games I read/scored, four were won on cycle 20, including the final being tied on the tossup and won on the bonus by Charter. It was actually 80-205 after 11 tossups, before they made their incredible comeback.

[EDIT TO ADD] In another thread, Bill Tressler reports that it was actually 285-225; Charter only had ten points on the last bonus.

Yeah, every time that i think another Delaware school can start to hang with Charter (namely, us) i see results like this that just blow me away. Their top six teams might be able to beat our B and C teams with no problem.

That wasn't our top six teams, we left several seniors at home for ACT/College applications. Notably, team B suffered in what might have been the most competitive bracket.

I want to thank Brother Nigel for running a good tournament. The kids said on balance this weekend's moderating was good.

I think Bergen, Hunter, Saint Joesph's are ourselves are very close in ability and we've been very fortunate the last two tournaments to squeak by.

I have commentary about NAQT's sets this year, a topic that I will start in the discussion section when I find some time tomorrow.

Thanks again. This is one our favorite trips of the year, even if it is among the most exhausting.
