Kennesaw State Academic Tournament (Sep 12, 2009)

Postby KSUPhiMu » Thu Jul 23, 2009 7:35 pm

The Kennesaw State University chapter of the Phi Mu Sorority will be hosting the inaugural Kennesaw State Academic Tournament (KSAT) on September 12, 2009, at the Kennesaw State campus in Kennesaw, Georgia. The tournament is open to any team in the Southeast and beyond with players grades 9-12. There will be a solid field cap of 36 teams due to the format of the event (to be mentioned later on).

Questions will be from NAQT and will be of the A-set variety (set # TBD).

Teams may consist of up to five players playing at one time, but the number of “extras” on the each team is up to the coach. Rounds will consist of 18 TUs with up to 18 bounceback three part bonuses. No powers or negs will be used. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams.

Tournament format will consist of five prelim rounds and five matched playoff rounds (in other words, rounds 1-5 in random divisions at the tournament director’s discretion, and rounds 6-10 will be seven six team “pools” based on over all rankings). All teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds and also received a complete set of the questions used (with two extra rounds left over).

The tournament fee will be $65 per team. The deadline to sign up will be Friday September 4, 2009, after which a $10 late fee per team will be added (if there are spots left open). The absolute last day we will accept a team is Wednesday September 9th to allow ample time for schedule/packet printing, etc. If there are spot left open to reach the 36 team field limit, the late fee may be waived.

Kennesaw State is located about 20 miles NW of Atlanta with easy access to Interstate 75 (Exit 271) and US Highway 41. For teams wishing to stay over night in the Kennesaw State area, there are an ample amount of hotel rooms in the Town Center Mall area (less than 2-3 miles from the KSU campus). More information on location and schedule will be announced later when room assignments are confirmed in early August.

Chattahoochee will have at least 2 teams there. Will there be a separate JV Division for 9th and 10th graders?

Not this year. Given it's out first time doing an event like this, we wanted to start small and double the size next year. Expect a 36/36 JV/V field for next year and thank you for your two teams!

Cedar Shoals (3)
Walton (2)
Creekview
Grayson
Central Gwinnett (1-2)

Obviously still some room left.

Hello all,
We've had some changes in the past few days for KSAT, the most important of which is this:

Due to the fact that KSU won't let us host on campus (for "economic reasons" when we open a building on a weekend) we will be hosting KSAT down the street at North Metro Church's Education Building, which they were gracious enough to allow. Here are the directions from Exit 269 from I-75

From I-75:

* Take Exit 269, Ernest Barrett Parkway/Kennesaw
* Go WEST on Ernest Barrett Parkway (turn LEFT off the ramp from Northbound and go under the bridge, RIGHT off the ramp Southbound)
* Cross Hwy 41 (Cobb Parkway), Old 41, and Stilesboro Road
* North Metro is on the LEFT between Stilesboro Road and Burnt Hickory Road

Phi Mu will also be selling lunch (pizza, candy and drinks, among other things) during the lunch break. If the day is nice, teams may eat outside or if not, inside the main building.

The second is field update, which is seen below. We would love to have some more teams. If you think your JV team might be interested, we would love to have them as these questions are geared towards younger teams as well.
Thank you very much for your support and understanding. We look forward to see you all September 12th!

Jen

Congrats to Brookwood A for winning the first ever Kennesaw State Academic Tournament. Walton A came in 2nd and Chattahoochee A came in 3rd.

Special thanks to all the members of the KSU Phi Mu sorority who gave up their Saturday to work this event which helped raise money for our charity, the Children's Miracle Network. We're not sure yet how much money was raised, but every little but helps! We know there were a few hiccups along the way, but it looks like everyone had fun. We will work on that for the next go around.

And thanks to the kids (and their coach, my cousin Robin, who served as director) from Cedar Shoals HS for helping us learn the game with a demonstration the night before. It helped us out a lot!

Ive been told the stats for the event are posted on the Cedar Shoals board at this address:

http://results.scobo.net/cedarshoalsHS

Thank you again everyone and we hope to have this event again the weekend after Labor Day (Sep 11, 2010) and HOPEFULLY this time on the KSU campus. :)

Looks like even though the three top Georgia teams have been weakened some, they're still ruling the state.
