Tar Heel Cup--9/26/09

Postby WSchultz » Tue Aug 18, 2009 8:57 pm

Hi, all!

UNC’s Quiz Bowl team will be hosting the Somethingth Annual Tar Heel Cup on September 26, 2009. As usual, it will take place on UNC’s campus—the exact buidings have yet to be reserved. Also as usual, the tournament will begin around 9 and run until late afternoon. I know that’s a bit vague—more details to come.

If you plan on coming, please send us a message at UNCQuizBowl@gmail.com. Go ahead and tell us your school, how many teams you will be bringing, and whether you can provide buzzers. We will be capping the number of teams at 28 (give or take a few), so please write soon.

The price is same as last year: $75 for one team, $50 for each additional team. You get a $10 discount for each buzzer set you bring.

For the curious, we will be buying our questions from HSAPQ; that’s where we got last year’s packet.

Please send any and all questions to UNCQuizBowl@gmail.com. We will be posting further details after our first team meeting. And if you know any coaches/schools I might have missed, please send this message along to them.

I think it might actually be the 10th, since I believe that exactly one had occurred before I went to my first back in 2001 (and I don't think CAT was around in its current form before 2000). It could just be the 9th, though.

The Tar Heel Cup went off without too many hitches. Congratulations to Southside High School of Greenville, SC, who became (to my knowledge) the first non-North Carolina school to win the Tar Heel Cup. They ran away with the competition, averaging over 600 points in the preliminary rounds.

Second place went to perennial winner Raleigh Charter, while Early College of Guilford and NCSSM A made the quarterfinals. NCSSM B won the consolation tournament with a victory over Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. Peter Schultz of Raleigh Charter, Ming Lin of Southside, and Jonathan Storch of Grimsley were the top three individual scorers.

We will do our best to put up stats within the next couple days. Thank to everyone who attended, and to all the volunteers who helped make it possible.

Congrats to Southside. They should be on everybody's radar. They were crazy fast.

I imagine that many people might be curious about stats, since Trevor's Trivia (sic?) in Chattanooga and the U of Maryland Fall Tournament also used the same HSAPQ SET---Number 8, I believe. So, it might be interesting to compare how teams from around the country did on the same set.

Oh, you played with bouncebacks... right? That explains the screwy PPB.

So, then, like, that doesn't really help us compare teams at all at different tournaments using this set. Hm.

Well, there's still all those tossups and stuff, but...

I can tell you that in our final match (round 11) Southside and Raleigh Charter A both had identical bonus conversion (25). Southside had 5 powers, Raleigh Charter had none. The final was 490-290, Southside. These data do not count bouncebacks (except the final score, but there were only 4 steals by Southside for 40 points total). I can tell you specifically what tossups and bonuses were answered by either side, if you're interested. I am pretty anal about scorekeeping.

As far as comparison goes, these are the only two teams in this field worth making external comparisons to. They were the only competition either team faced all day. I mean no disrespect to the other teams and coaches in NC, but there are really only a few programs fielding teams with national chops these days. We're still trying to build. We have a lot more teams competing regularly, and the level of competition grows all the time. We have more teams attending national competitions, though most are not competitive at that level yet, but they're taking that first step of getting there and seeing what the water's like.

Not a big deal, i was curious about you guys though since i've been really building you up since the start of the year as a team that people forgot about and didn't "rank" high enough.

I appreciate the support, but I am not sure that we are there yet. But we've only been to one tournament, and we did not have our entire front four at the THC.
